Let's talk about modern crosscuts for a moment. On the surface they look cheaper than a restored vintage saw, but in the long run you're better off with vintage.

Not to throw too much shade at Crosscut saw company, but their saws are only about 50% done when they ship them- basic laser cut blanks, with about 3 strokes of a file on each tooth. This photo shows just how square the factory teeth are. The set is really inconsistent, varying from 0.000 to 0.019. the rakers were worse, 3 thou taller than the teeth. The cutting process leaves the edges of the teeth and the gullets extremely rough. These saws have no taper grind to them and are soft steel. All told, they need a ton of work to get cutting, and will need lots of maintenance in their life.

When you're the only one in the region that knows how to work on sewing machines you get to work on some oddball stuff. This is a union special handheld chain stitch machine typically used in feed stores for sewing closed feed sacks. In this case it's sewing together geotextile under a highway paving job, and this little sewing machine has the entire job shut down. It's back up and sewing now and back to the customer.

This was a really fun really big project, a replica gun bag from the movie The Mummy, with a couple updates. The bag is made from #8 canvas with full grain leather accents and straps, and is designed with a rollout organizer complete with bandoleers and a PALS panel.

Hook timing- one of the most important (and frustrating) parts of a sewing machine. Add zigzag into the equation and you have about 20 tiny little adjustments to make it sew correctly forward, backwards, and with the zigzag. This 1980 consew is still a great machine, if I can just get it back into time.
