To all the Gypsies who have traveled afar to dance to the drumming at The Grand Outlandish,
A brilliant star has gone out. Yesterday, a well loved and inspirational drummer we know as Derf, passed on. I ask each of you, whether you knew him or not, to do an honorary dance move or gesture toward our friends in the south. Derf will never be forgotten, and his love will continue through us all.

DANCE OPPORTUNITY: Starting Sept. 3, Gotta Dance is introducing a new belly dance series with Sandy, an instructor from Turkey. Classes are at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Gotta Dance, and will focus on Turkish style belly dance. Drop-in rate is $10. Here's the class description from Gotta Dance:

"'Dance of the Hottest' is what Sandy calls her class.Turkish oriental dance is referred to in Turkey as ‘Oryantal Dans’, or simply ‘Oryantal’. The Turkish style of belly dance is lively and playful with a greater outward projection of energy than the more contained Egyptian style. Turkish dancers are known for their energetic, athletic (even gymnastic) style. The focus of this class will be to let your body move to and become familiar with the great sounds of belly dance music and flow with it. It will reduce stress and you will use muscles you didn’t know you had. The class will spend the first 5 to 10 minutes with warm up exercises. After that will learn to isolate the different muscle groups and to control your movements. Last 10 minutes will be free style belly dance so you can practice what you have just learned."
