Sammamish Rowing Association

What started out as a way for his family to enjoy a fun summer activity together turned into a life changing opportunity for SRA Junior Program alum, Hans Struzyna. It started in 2004 when Struzyna’s family struggled together in the slough in some Alden singles as they discovered the sport of rowing as a family with a few casual private lessons. Casually, a coach mentioned that SRA had a junior team. That inspired Struzyna, as well as his younger sister Allie, to join a 3 week summer session where he was able to take part in the Greenlake Summer Extravaganza. All it took was a 1k trip down the course and he was hooked. That casual summer regatta started him on a path that would shape his future in an incredibly profound way.

Our team is looking for our next Junior Girls Head Coach to lead our Junior Girls squad and help develop our amazing student-athletes. In addition, SRA is hiring the new role of Business Manager to help steer operations of our organization. These full time positions provide applicants the opportunity to join a team dedicated to igniting a passion for rowing in all who visit our boathouse. We hope you apply!

Christopher Doran runs , a fitness training gym in Redmond. Chris has been working with rowers from SRA since 2009 and currently there are 30+ members visiting the gym on a regular basis for very thorough rower oriented work outs. Chris and SAF are regular contributors to our fundraising, gala and auction offerings allowing SRA to inspire more people to row. We are incredibly grateful for his partnership!

Over the past couple of years rowers have had the opportunity to vie, via fund raising auction, for a seat in an eight with Chris as a guest “learn-to-row” participant. Sunday, August 9th was a beautiful morning to row with Chris and see how he would do in a shell on the water rather than in the gym.

This year’s Spring Fling auction winners across ECM and MM took to the water with Chris in two seat and moved down the slough by fours on the square. Out on the lake, learn-to-row level drilling started, then up to novice level rowing by sixes and all eight. The session finished with a couple of experienced-level start sequences. Some saw this as pay-back time for all those tough workouts that leave one aching for days.
There was an element of that but in reality the morning served as pay-it-forward time with Chris getting a first hand appreciation of how rowers move and the exhilaration one experiences from a good send in a well set boat. A good time was had by all. We’re looking forward to the next lesson with Chris! 💪
