Most clients want to increase lean body mass and burn fat. Therefore, I tell them that 30 to 90 seconds allows the body to replenish energy stores so they don’t compromise their workout intensity or form, and can therefore trigger the most lean muscle growth. For absolute strength purposes when performing large, barbell exercises, it’s best to rest for two to five minutes.

Accepting failure is about accepting your fallibility as a human being. No one is perfect. Perfection is something that does not exist. What does exist is excellence and striving for excellence. If you believe that you have reached your own level of perfection, this is the opposite of awfulizing (when you believe that nothing worse can exist). The three things that matter most in attaining hypertrophy, meaning your muscles getting bigger, are: genetics, training intensity, and your gender.

Genetics comes into play because of the different types of muscle fibers. People who have fast-twitch fiber acquire muscles with more ease than people with predominantly slow-twitch muscle fibers.
