Teaching kids how to swim is our passion.

“What age should toddlers start swimming lessons?”

It’s one of the most common questions parents ask, especially as summer approaches.

Many toddlers can begin swim lessons earlier than parents expect. At this stage, lessons focus on building comfort in the water while introducing foundational water safety skills alongside a parent or caregiver.

Over time, toddlers start developing important abilities like floating, moving through the water with support, and responding to simple instructions. All of these things contribute to safer behavior around water.

Learning to swim is a process, and starting early helps build skills, see real progress, and gain confidence step by step.

💬 Curious if your toddler is ready to get started? We’re happy to help. Send us a DM or drop us a comment!

At Goldfish, our monthly celebration for June is all about celebrating animals (and incorporating this into the curriculum that gets kids excited to learn) 🐾

From dogs doing the “paddle” to fish in the water, animals and swimming naturally go together. 🐠

Each month, we introduce a new celebration theme that helps keep learning engaging and effective. Using familiar movements with an added element of imagination to help swimmers stay focused as they build real skills in the water.

You might hear about “sea otter back floats” or see swimmers practicing their “dolphin kicks”, and behind each one is a purpose: helping kids strengthen technique, improve body control, and build confidence in the water.

Because every lesson is about progress, skill-building, and helping kids become safer swimmers. We just teach in a way that kids enjoy the learning process. ✨

💬 What’s your child’s favorite animal right now?

What actually happens during a swim lesson?

For many parents, the first lesson can feel like a mystery.

A typical class includes guided skill practice, playful activities that help reinforce learning, and lots of encouragement from instructors along the way. Kids work on important skills like floating, safe movement through the water, and listening for directions. All while having fun! 😊

Because when kids enjoy the experience, they’re more likely to stay engaged and keep building new skills.

💬 If your child is already in lessons, what’s their favorite part?

Progress in swim lessons doesn’t always look like swimming across the pool. 🧡

Some of the most important milestones are the ones that help kids stay safer in and around the water. When we talk with parents about the most meaningful milestones, the ones that give them the most peace of mind, these are typically the ones we hear about.

Progress can look like:
✔️ Rolling onto their back to float
✔️ Climbing out of the pool independently
✔️ Listening and responding to instructor directions
✔️ Staying calm and confident in the water

These skills build the foundation for stronger swimmers over time, and they’re an important part of learning how to respect and navigate water safely.

Because real progress is about preparation, confidence, and safety.

💬 What’s a swim skill your child has learned recently that made you proud (and maybe breathing a little easier)?

Summer travel means new pools, new places, and new water safety reminders. ☀️

Whether you're heading to a hotel pool, spending the day at the beach, or visiting family with a backyard pool, a little preparation can help keep kids safer around the water.

A few quick reminders families often find helpful:
• Take a few minutes to look around and spot exits, lifeguards, and safety equipment
• Stay close and actively supervise, especially in unfamiliar water environments
• Use Coast Guard-approved life jackets when a personal flotation device is needed
• Talk with kids about pool rules before they jump in

Every pool or body of water is a little different, so building strong water safety habits helps kids stay prepared wherever summer takes them. 🏖️

Water Safety Tip 🩵 Supervision isn’t a breakable rule.

One of the most important things to know about drowning is that it’s often silent and quick. It doesn’t look like the splashing or shouting we see in movies.

That’s why active supervision is one of the most important layers of water safety.

Many families use the “Water Watcher” approach, and it’s one we highly recommend and encourage. This means one adult is designated to actively watch the water at all times, without distractions like phones, conversations, or multitasking.

It can be easy to think that having a lot of adults around means that at least someone is watching, but that’s not always the case. Take the guessing out of it. When everyone knows who’s watching the water, it helps keep kids safer and lets everyone be that much more in the moment and enjoying it together. 😊

👉 Save this reminder for your next pool or beach day and share it with someone who spends time around water with kids!
