Congrats on winning his first MMA Championship tonight at
Sababu stepped up to fight for the title in a rematch against the opponent who beat him in his debut a couple of years ago. Aside from winning another championship for Team GC, we felt it was the perfect way to monitor his progress against tough opposition.
After a competitive first round, with both fighters trying to gain a grappling advantage against the cage, Sababu settled into a more well-rounded approach. He landed sharp, quick combinations that were both efficient and accurate anytime he was given space. He also maintained patience against the cage in clinch exchanges.
Unfortunately, during the different exchanges, his opponent continued to lose his mouthguard. After a few warnings he was eventually deducted a point early in the second round. The next time led to another point deduction, and finally the third time caused a halt to the bout and Sababu was awarded the victory by disqualification.
His opponent was apologetic and sportsmanlike in defeat. It was still a shame, as it felt like Sababu was just finding his rhythm and separating himself during the 2nd round. Even still, the result seems a bit inconclusive and, as his opponent was willing to do previously, Sababu is more than willing to run it back in hopes of a more definitive outcome.
For now, we’ll enjoy the moment. Congrats Sababu on your first MMA Championship. This one feels extra special, as we’ve been had Sababu training with us since he was in high school, and we’ve had the privilege of watching him grow in all areas of the game. Now he can call himself a Champion (in MMA, as he’s already won a handful of titles in Muay Thai).
Killer way to close out the evening! No Gi with Coach Ant was packed tonight with over 30 members of the team putting in work. 7 pm every Tuesday, pack your Rashguard and show up ready to work!
