This week, The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers will hold its Defending Sexual Assault Cases seminar. One of the sessions is titled “Why Would They Lie? A Practical Guide to Understanding and Exposing Dishonesty in Sexual Assault Cases.” Here's the actual truth: The Department of Defense’s own data shows that false reports of sexual assault were one percent in 2024 and have not exceeded three percent in a decade. This is a lot to ask, but we asking anyone who was called a liar after being assaulted to speak up with the hashtag #WhyWouldILie. Tell the truth that cost you sleep, safety, or friends. Write what you wish someone had said to you when it happened. Share your story so no survivor feels alone reading those words again. We can drown out this myth with our shared experiences.
