Here is a recent PB from at the California International Marathon!
“I managed to run a 2:29:05, which was a strong result for me. - my goal was to get under 2:30 I hadn’t run the marathon for 15 years so it was essentially a debut. I started out a bit too fast and paid dearly in the final miles, but had a great experience and definitely am motivated to run the distance again. I think I placed 95th.
Many other SES runners participated in the event and did great as well.
My next big race will be in February- Rock and Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon. It should be fun! Hoping to crack into the 1:08 range.”

Keep on killing it, Dominic!

We’re back! This week, we feature SES team member Thomas Sullivan. He had killer back to back performances at Mt Baldy Run-To-The-Top and the Fayetteville Spartan US Trail Championships (2 of 2).
“My wife and I had been meaning to travel to Arkansas to visit family for some time. When we saw that the Spartan US Trail Championship was in Fayetteville, we booked our flights. Trails in Fayetteville are much different than in the Sierra; they're winding, rocky, muddy, covered in leaves - the perfect setting for Spartan. I was unsure how the race would play out as there were so many sections of the trail that would break up momentum so my race strategy was simple: go out hard and race to the finish. I went out in the lead from the gun, found a way to navigate the twists and turns without any serious ankle rolling, and was able to come away with the victory. I gotta say, holding up a big fake check has been a goal for some time!! I will be racing the Spartan Golden Gate Classic in San Francisco next week!”

We’re back! This week, we feature SES team member Thomas Sullivan. He had killer back to back performances at Mt Baldy Run-To-The-Top and the Fayetteville Spartan US Trail Championships (1 of 2).
“I had the pleasure of racing this historic (5th oldest trail/mountain race in the US) Mt Baldy Run-To-The-Top on October 17th. I was coaxed into racing this bby who started his trail running career in the mountains of southern California. The trails in the area were pristine! The race course ascents 4,000 vertical feet to the summit of Mt. San Antonio (Mt. Baldy as it's more commonly known) in under 7 miles. This uphill race featured fast running on dirt roads and technical "no fall" sections of trail before climbing to the summit. I crossed the finish line in first place after taking a few wrong turns - adding a little more time for me to enjoy the mountains. Some 30 people waited for runners at the summit to congratulate them, provide them with food and water and usher them back down the mountain. This race was old school. There was no tram down to the start; although it was an uphill race you had to run back to the startline. The community of so-cal runners was welcoming and the course was all-time. Seriously considering racing it next year to defend the title!”

As we say goodbye to 2020, we thought we'd share some of our SES members accomplishments during this challenging and crazy year! Please drop a comment on YOUR accomplishments for 2020!
Kate Rye:
1. A PR in the 5k during a workout
2. Napa Valley 5k 1st place female
3. Going from not being able to stand or take a single step to running strong in the span of 3 months after my life-threatening accident :
NOTE: Kate also swam the ENTIRE length of Lake Tahoe (22 miles!)
EmKay Sullivan:
In 2020 I got to run in the Olympic Trials which has been a dream since 2012. After that I switched gears and started training for trails, only to have all of my races cancelled. I channeled that training into running the FKT of the Ruby Crest Trail! (With husband Tommy Sullivan)
Anna Costello:
At the very beginning of the pandemic I was able to sneak in 1 half marathon race and able to get a cool new personal best (1:22). The rest of the year was filled with makeshift challenges and time trials which was really fun! I got to be a part of the women's team that broke the women's record at the Ruby Mountain Trail Relay. I completed Vertmas which is something I thought I would never do! I also turned 28 on the 28th and celebrated with my longest run in my lifetime, 28 miles of course 😀I found a new love for the trails in 2020 and I am looking forward to more adventures in 2021!
Christal Cuadra Keegan:
Reflecting on 2020, in a world locked down and cancelled, my biggest achievement is I ran most days! Happy for 2021--keep moving forward!
Caitlin Howden:
I ran a post-collegiate PR for a 5k, ran my longest run ever on my bday (27k for 27th year), and ran the most elevation I've ever done in a year! Can't wait to see what adventures 2021 brings!
Devyn Ramsay:
I haven't done much this year in terms of racing. I guess 1 being my first ever 30k trail race, but then got lost. Vertmas was quite an accomplishment. Getting 25k of feet in 22 days (instead of 25) was tough mentally to get out the door everyday and make my quads and calves cry. But it forced me to explore new areas around Reno and I love that!
NOTE: Devyn may have gotten lost on the 30k race, but she WON it!!
Amanda Henriques:
Due to injury, I started out this year with a 22:41 5k time and eventually boosted myself to a 19:16 5k!
Sarah Raitter:
2020 was such an interesting year. I got to run on the Ruby Mountain Trail Relay team with Anna, Jen, and Devyn. I ran 350 days and hit 3,120 miles, found a HUGE love of trails and especially uphills, and finished my first 50k. Most importantly, 2020 was full of great running adventures and I got to share those with some amazing people!
Lupe Cabada: The 5k time trial in Sacramento on the track, I ended up running an all-time 5k PR of 15:45 (5:03 average)!!
Freddy Barraza:
The event of the year ended up being the Ruby Mountain Relay. That was fun to road trip, "race" awesome trails, and camp with friends.
Jaime Cabada:
The trip to Lamoille Canyon for the Ruby Mountain Relay was a highlight because we won and broke the record. The views from up on the trails and camping with the team made it even better!
Dominic Henriques: (stolen from his strava post)
Recapping some of the accomplishments for the year:
--Joined a great running team that I'm very thankful to be a part of--Sierra Endurance Sports
--Half marathon PR--1:09:15
--Reno-based 5k PR--15:30
--Got to run the Carlsbad 5000 despite things going virtual--15:13
--Found $100 on a run
--Racked up 2200+ miles--300 more than 2019
--Avoided injury or major illness
--Embraced the Tempo run!

As runners we are usually focused on what our bodies NEED for fuel but sometimes you just need to give it what it WANTS! Check out what SES Athletes have after a big accomplishment whether a big workout or a race effort and let us know what YOU like to have! Also comment down below if you spot the winning combo for our team!
SES Q and A: Best workout/post-race meal:
Devyn Ramsay: My favorite post workout/race recovery food depends on how the race went. IF I raced well, burger and fries. IF I didn't, I usually add a milkshake to make myself feel better :)
Caitlin Howden: No matter if it’s running, mountain biking or skiing for me….after working hard all I want is a big juicy BURGER.
Sarah Raitter: My favorite post workout/race recovery meal is an enormous veggie burrito and a nice cold beer.
Jenifer Mac: My favorite post-race meal is a burger and a beer. Nothing like earning some delicious carbs after a race.
EmKay Sullivan: Burgers and beeer!
Anna Costello: Can’t go wrong with a post-race burger and beer.
Christal Cuadra Keegan: Burger and Beer! I’d just add that I subscribe to the motto preached by ultra runners who raised me: eat what your body wants. Trust your body, there’s something in that particular food—be it fat, carbs, protein, vitamin/minerals—that your body is keenly aware that it needs.
Lupe Cabada: Veggie Burger with Sweet Potato Fries and a Brown Ale Beer from a Brewery.
Freddy Barazza: Big Fat Burger and Coke/beer
Nathan Chellman: Lasagna; Nice and hearty and just a little unhealthy!
Jaime Cabada: A Burger and Fries. It brings me back to life real Fast!
Dave Zaski: Meat Lovers Pizza with an IPA!
Dominic Henriques: Fairlife Chocolate milk
Inspiration comes from so many places, but one of them is often the professionals who do what we love to do. We asked our Sierra Endurance Sports team who is their favorite professional runner and why. Check it out and tell us who your favorite professional runner is!
Amanda Henriques: My favorite professional runner is Collier Lawrence!! She runs for Oiselle and is an amazing person who works very hard to achieve her goals. Also, she is a personal friend and local legend!
Dominic Henriques: Lopez Lamong. His story is such an inspiration! Amazing that he is alive, let alone a refugee that found a new life in America and has become a premier athlete in the 5k 10k distance. Second fave is Eluid Kipchoge, he’s like a philosopher. Everything he says is deep, has meaning and assumes the best in humanity.
Sarah Raitter: “I’m a huge runnerd and I am in awe of and respect anyone who dedicates their time, energy, and passion to our sport. My current favorite is professional ultra runner Courtney Dauwalter. Courtney ALWAYS smiles during her races and truly seems to love what she does. I actually wrote her a message on Facebook and she responded almost immediately. She also left me with a quote that has stuck with me…”You can do more than you think you can.” She has this amazing mental strength that I hope to channel in all of my runs and races.
Lupe Cabada: Dathan Ritzenhein. He's done amazing things for American Distance Running and put us back on the map. He's really gritty and he just seems like a humble and Genuine person on top of everything.
Christal Cuadra Keegan: Krissy Moehl is this super-ultrarunning-being, yet is approachable and down to earth. I'm so grateful to have shared running miles with her, and to have witnessed how she handles the ups and downs that are natural in ultra-marathons with this effortless positivity. She is indisputably an incredible runner, but more importantly a great friend and mentor.
Freddy Barraza: Haile G. He was on top of the world when I started running. Many great runners only have a few hits and then flame out, he had a 25 year career and did it all. Road, track, and XC.
5k and 10k and Marathon WR holder during his career (He set 27 WR!). Multiple olympic and world championships.
Always a great ambassador for the sport, smiling and doing great interviews. And most importantly he always did a lot for his home country, he started many businesses with his road racing earnings to employ his fellow Ethiopians.
Abby Parker Sargent: My favorite pro runner is Magdalena Lewy Boulet. She’s currently a professional ultra runner, but I got the opportunity to know her when she was training for the Olympic Marathon Trials in 2008. She ran one of the gutsiest races I have ever seen. She was without a professional sponsor at the time and was a complete underdog, but that didn’t stop her from running her race. She knew what she could do and went out there and did her thing. Ran 24 miles by herself, with a stacked chase pack behind her, before finally being overtaken and finished second, earning her spot. She’s also just a wonderful human being, super brilliant, amazing mom, amazing wife, and advocate for the sport.
Jaime Cabada: Shelby Houlihan because she has a vicious kick that’s unbeatable and fun to watch!
EmKay Sullivan: Emelie Forsberg! She is a badass sky runner.
Anna Costello: My favorite pro runner right now is Allie Kieffer. A few years ago she got a lot of flack for not “looking like a marathoner" but still finished in the top 10 at the New York Marathon 2 years in a row. She stands firm that you don’t need a “runner’s body” to be successful at a high level. Body image is a really important issue to me and her statements came at a time in my life where I needed that kind of message. I think she is a great example to young women runner everywhere.
Reno is a great place to live if you are into the outdoors as we have soooo many options! What's your favorite place to run? We asked our Sierra Endurance Sports team members where their favorite place is, check it out, and leave a comment with your answer!!
Lupe Cabada: Woodchuck headed West, but sometimes East to switch it up. I love how it's away from vehicle traffic and can be very peaceful and scenic!!
Brian Solomon: Here is my answer for the question: my favorite place to run in Reno is Hole in the Wall out and back from Woodchuck. It’s nice and quiet, has great views of Reno and most of the year the ditch has water in it so it makes it a great place to run with my dog. We can run the just about 9 miles out and back and I don’t need to carry water for her. She loves it!
Freddy Barraza: My favorite place and my strava will back it up, is the river path from idlewild towards Patagucci. I run there a lot, It’s very pretty with the trees and the river. A lot of it is on the bike path so no cars to deal with or street crossings. It’s centrally located so good place to meet friends for run. It’s flat and you see lots of fellow runners and cyclist at there.
Jaime Cabada: Dry Pond Loop because you get some good work on the climb, but then can have some fun bombing down the other side!
Manny Calderone: Reno High School because there's no traffic, it's on the way home and it's Flat earth 🌍
Dominic Henriques.: I will probably say Verdi lol. My go to because it’s close to home and convenient.
Nathan Chellman: My favorite run in town is the Reno Vista trail near Rancho. Epic views of downtown and gnarly climbing!
Tommy Sullivan: Peavine. There are so many options! From short and steep to long and winding, Peavine has it all.
Sarah Raitter: “The Tahoe-Pyramid Trail is my favorite local trail! I love it because it has a little bit of everything….someflatter sections, some hills—but nothing too intimidating, and some downhills to make it interesting. The scenery along the Truckee river is gorgeous and it’s also Desi’s favorite (my dog).”
Christal Cuadra Keegan: “My life’s demands don’t afford me a ton of time and so I’m big on the convenience factor of being able to jump on a trail where I don’t lose time commuting. Tahoe trails are a treat, but this summer I had fun just exploring around the Truckee Meadows trails in my backyard, particularly in Hunter Creek and areas behind Caughlin Ranch. I would set out on a run and rather than stick to my usual route, when I came upon a fork I hadn’t ventured on before I would take it and see where it would lead. I would spy other new trails on these “pick your adventure” runs that made me wonder where that one went, and it made me eager to find out on my next run.”
Here’s a great link to discover what’s right here:https://www.washoecounty.us/parks/files/trail_maps/2016%20county%20Trail%Guide%20Final_OPTIMIZED.pdf
EmKay Sullivan: Anywhere on the TRT near the Meadows and Rose!
Jenifer Mac: The bench loop (starting in Rancho San Rafael park and going into Evans Canyon). It’s a great throwback to my college favorite. It’s close and has a surprisingly great view.
Anna Costello :My trail is the boca/prosser dam trail. I love how beautiful and peaceful it is. The first time I ran it was the first year they changed that leg in the odyssey so it also has some good memories attached to it. I love how it feels like I'm getting away from reno but also not really! The trees all around make me really happy too 😊
Devyn Ramsay: My favorite place to run in Reno would be the Halo Trail! I like being away from crowded paths and getting amazing views of the city the entire way! 13 mi (looped) single track on the hills of Mother Peavine FTW!
Caitlin Howden: Dry Pond Loop because no matter how many times I run there I can't believe how beautiful it is 😍And you get to fly downhill after a good climb up!
