Here are 5 ways the practice of Pilates benefits your riding:
1) Relaxation - knowing how to release tension, especially in your hips end arms, can be particularly helpful to the dressage rider.
2) Alignment - if you don't understand proper alignment off your horse, you'll never understand how to accomplish it on your horse
3) Breathing - there is a reason why exhaling can help you with transitions. Breathing not only helps you to engage your abdominals, it also allows you to move freely with your horse's movement.
4) Focus and Precision - there are few things better than Pilates for teaching independent use of aids
5) Body Awareness - all riders can benefit from becoming more aware of their body, especially the muscles needed to initiate certain movements.

Lost Posture: Why Indigenous Cultures Don't Have Back Pain 06/08/2015

Back pain - we all get it, especially riders. The main focus of my Pilates classes is to create more core strength, as stronger abdominals can help prevent back pain. In addition, I focus on toning and strengthening the gluteus medius muscles. This not only gives you a tight, toned and lifted rear-end, it also can help prevent lower back pain.

Lost Posture: Why Indigenous Cultures Don't Have Back Pain There are a few populations in the world where back pain hardly exists. One woman thinks she has figured out why, and she's sharing their secrets. Have Americans forgotten how to stand properly?
