Ghosts, witches and zombies? Nah, they don’t scare me.

New fear unlocked: the Lake Tahoe Otter.

Imagine peacefully swimming in Lake Tahoe and then being pulled underwater by the legs. When you surface, you’re face to face with a very angry otter who immediately starts attacking.

The only thing I’m more afraid of is being attacked by a family of otters!

I always thought otters were cute until one attacked me. You wouldn’t believe the number of people who asked me if I tried to pet it! For the record: no! I was not once tempted to pet the wild animal that was biting and scratching me mercilessly.

But I am taking this wild experience and turning it into something good! Because this experience taught me that even the most experienced swimmers can experience unexpected dangers in the water, and made me double down on my efforts to skill Reno Tahoe children in Infant Swimming Resource Self-Rescue so they are prepared for the unexpected in the water as well! My mom treated me to a deluxe pedicure today. She has been offering for weeks, but I waited until I was sure my wounds from the Lake Tahoe Otter Attack were completely healed.

The otter mercilessly attacked my feet and lower legs as I tried to swim away from it. The attack has actually made life sweeter - little moments like this bring me so much joy, reflecting on how far I’ve come in just two months.

This audio is what goes through my head during clothing lessons in the last week of ISR Self-Rescue lessons.

Why do we practice skills in clothing? Because 70% of drownings happen when a child is not expected to be in the water. Because drowning knows no season.

If you want peace of mind with your child around water, I am scheduling 2027 swim lessons in Reno and Incline Village now!

Remember when I was attacked by an otter in Lake Tahoe?! I’m turning a wild experience into something good! I’ve created some funny Lake Tahoe Otter merchandise to raise money for CAST Water Safety Foundation, which will provide swim scholarships for ISR Self-Rescue lessons in our community and nationwide.
