About Ram & Chandra
Tyagis Ram and Chandra (Robert Smith and Denise Ruelas) are longtime residents of Ananda Village in Nevada City, California, and are both dedicated Kriyabans. Their spiritual service is rooted in devotion, music, and the living guidance of the Masters.
Ram is an ordained Lightbearer Minister of Ananda Sangha/Church of SelfâRealization, serving since 1981. Chandra supports his ministry through her musical gifts, and together they lead a wide variety of Ananda events, including kirtans, concerts, pilgrimages, Sunday Services, and retreats.
As both Ananda Yoga and Meditation instructors, as well as professional musicians and singers, Ram and Chandra bring a unique blend of spiritual depth, joy, and artistic expression to their ministry.
In 2023, they recorded two devotional albums:

⢠Channels of Peace â The Spirit of St. Francis of Assisi
Ram has studied, practiced, and taught Paramhansa Yoganandaâs teachings since 1977 under the direct guidance of Swami Kriyananda. He was a founding member of Ananda Assisi in Italy, where he lived for seven years and met Pope John Paul II at the Vatican in March 1989.

The Science of Yoga focuses primarily on techniques that work with the energy body and expand consciousness through various practices, including pranayama, hatha yoga, and meditation. Thatâs the yogiâs bag of tricks to realize our Divine connection. But in the beautiful prism of Godâs creation there is an innate creativity like a kaleidoscope of different variations on the one theme, or like a flower that morphs when it is planted in a slightly different soil. Â
This creative reactivity within new environments in a spiritual sense is the manifestation of the arts through each individual soulâs expression. When we are in that flow, we are alive to bring forth our God-given talents into the world and to literally allow the Divine Mother to experience Her joyful Self through us in uniquely beautiful ways. Swami Kriyananda brought clarity to this truth:
âCreativity is fundamental to the spiritual path. To grow spiritually, you must give of yourself; first to God, and then, as He inspires you, to God in others. The devoteeâs constant prayer must be, âLord, help me to serve You better.â When you ask God to work through you, all workâwhether artistic or mundaneâbecomes creative, because spirit is ever-new!â
The expression of creativity, especially when we consciously tune into a Divine flow, effortlessly increases our energy, concentration and thus our ability to feel the many aspects of the Divine (most assuredly joy, love, and peace). It enhances our lives in wondrous ways AND we are able to share and expand Godâs blessings to all. The arts can become a universal bridge to higher consciousness no matter what religion one identifies with (or not!)
