I’m grateful for my “failures”

I attempted a 100k race a couple weeks ago and I didn’t complete it. I missed a turn around mile 24 and when I got back to the route, I did an extra 4 miles and 1000ft of elevation. To make the cutoff time, I would have needed to run 5 miles in 15 mins (it didn’t happen).

I was disappointed because I wanted to see if I would be able to finish it, and if not, test how long I could physically/mentally last. In the past few years, I’ve been trying to focus more on the journey of striving for a goal and what I learn from it rather than focus on the result.

I had this idea that if I don’t reach a goal its because of poor preparation or not pushing myself hard enough. But I’m slowly realizing that s**t happens and sometimes you don’t meet that goal (right now), and that’s okay because just setting a goal and prepping for it has been such a great experience.
If I didn’t sign up for 100k, I wouldn’t have spent hours (like 10hrs some days 💀) on the trails with **thag6 .man_doesitlike_no.man

I’m excited to try the Cuyamaca 100k again next year and I’ll probably sign up for more things that make me nervous 😅

I’m also terrible with remembering to take pictures so there’s only happy and hopeful pics at the start lol

I’m grateful that I’m surrounded by people who push me to do hard things

I ran my first ultramarathon a couple of weeks ago. Scroll to the end to see me at the finish 😂

It was 50k (31 miles) with about 6k feet of elevation gain! It’s now far enough behind me that I can look back, laugh at how underprepared I was for the rain, and forget how terrible it was to reconsider running it again. The cutoff time was 8 hours and I made it just in time at 7 hrs and 52 mins.

, **thag6 , .man_doesitlike_no.man , and I ran the 50k, ran her first marathon, and ran his first half marathon! I’m happy that all of them were down to drive an hour then spend 8hrs running in the rain. We all finished with no injuries which was the main goal and even though this was the worst way to get started in trail running, every race in the future will seem easier!

I wish we had a picture with everyone, but we just wanted to be warm and dry, so we forgot 😢

I’m grateful for Floki 🐶

Floki turned 1 today! He’s the biggest ball of energy and the cuddliest, giant lap dog combined. It’s been a fun first year learning how to train him and also learning about expectations and being flexible.

(Floki is named after a character in Vikings. And you should definitely watch it!)

I’m grateful for failure

What do you consider failure?

I attempted to summit Mt Shasta this weekend, and we turned back about 2000 feet from the top. It’s hard not to view that as a failure. There’s a clear goal and we didn’t reach that goal. There’s a lot of “should haves” that come to my mind when a goal isn’t reached and it’s hard to see the positive aspects.

Success and failure isn’t necessarily black and white, and there’s a lot of wins that I don’t get to celebrate because I can’t find that gray area. Learning and gaining experience doesn’t seem like a win because it’s something that is supposed to happen, but it’s a win and it’s something that should be celebrated more often!

I think the biggest success that I disregard is just getting outside. We were able to make the time to spend a couple days in the mountain, something that seems hard to justify with a busy group of people.

What are some hidden successes in your “failures”?
