NJ World War 1 Veterans 114th Infantry 29th Division

McClellan in Alabama where many of these photographs were taken. It was then that the 29th Division was created by combining northern & southern National Guard units from NJ, Maryland, Delaware & Virginia and became known as the " Blue & Grey". In the summer of 1918 the 29th Division sailed for France for training and in October 1918 were engaged in the Meuse-Argone offensive where they were in battle for 3 consecutive weeks and the division suffered 1/3 casualties, many of them from Hackensack NJ and northern NJ. Captain Harry Doremus, commander of Company C and a Hackensack resident was KIA as was his aide Sgt. Walter Brown. The American Legion Post in Hackensack is named after Capt Doremus and the VFW Post in River Edge is named after Sgt. The company was relieved on October 30,1918 just before the war ended with the signing of the armistice on Novmber 11,1918 at 11 o'clock.
