Turning 70 is Groovy, baby! Far Out!
I had the distinct honor of making my sister Cheryl Hux Lunsford Halford's SURPRISE Birthday party cake(s), and was given complete creative license with it...LOOK OUT!! 🤣😂 Chris suggested the 70s disco ball idea, and I kinda went a little crazy with it...lol
The platform lit up, AND the the disco balls on the sides had flashing fiberoptics, too! It was great, until the 100° south Mississippi heat & humidity hit that homemade buttercream. Then we were forced to dive in and destroy the evidence that my cakes aren't always perfect! SOMETIMES they succumb to our climate! It was, of course, still yummy-to-the-tummy, if I have to say so myself (I don't get to partake of many of these cakes! Lol)!
Happy Official Birthday tomorrow, Sister! Love you so very much!!

A father watched his daughter walk toward a group of kids at a hotel pool. They picked up their ball and left.

The father was Gordon Hartman. For 22 years he had run the largest locally owned homebuilding and land-development company in San Antonio, the kind of business most people spend a lifetime trying to build.

His daughter Morgan was born with cognitive and physical special needs. On a family vacation, she saw children playing and went to join them, and the children took their ball and moved away.

Hartman has never softened what he saw. "I'll never forget the look of anguish and dismay on Morgan's face," he said. He decided there had to be a way to bridge the gap.

In 2005, he sold his companies. He and his wife, Maggie, put the proceeds into a family foundation with one purpose: to build things the world had not built for people like their daughter.

The first thing they built was 25 acres of it.

Morgan's Wonderland opened in San Antonio on April 10, 2010, on the site of an old quarry. It was the first theme park in the world designed from the ground up for guests with physical, cognitive, and developmental disabilities.

Not retrofitted. Designed. Every ride was engineered so a wheelchair could roll straight on, with no transfer and no sitting out.

There is a carousel with chariots built for wheelchairs. A Ferris wheel that takes them too. A Sensory Village of touch-and-hear activities, and quiet spaces for anyone who gets overwhelmed by noise and crowds. Daily attendance is capped so the lines never grow long and the park never gets too loud.

Here's the part most people never heard.

Anyone with a special need gets in free. Always. And because of that free admission, Hartman has said the park doesn't turn a profit — it loses roughly a million dollars a year, and he considers that the entire point.

Three out of four visitors have no disability at all. That was deliberate too. Hartman didn't want a park where people with special needs were watched. He wanted one where everyone played in the same place.

In 2017, he built the next piece: Morgan's Inspiration Island, described as the world's first ultra-accessible splash park, with waterproof wheelchairs so guests could get into the water instead of watching from a dry edge.

All of it traces back to one afternoon at a pool, and to a girl who was left standing there.

Morgan can't do simple math, and she struggles to form full sentences. She will likely never run a company or read this story. What she did was change the direction of her father's entire second life, without ever meaning to.

The park has since welcomed more than a million guests from all 50 states and dozens of countries. It has inspired similar parks elsewhere and helped retire the idea that accessibility is a favor rather than a design choice.

Morgan's Wonderland is still open. Admission for anyone with a special need is still free, and the gate still runs at a loss on purpose. Somewhere in it today, a kid who has spent a lifetime being told "sorry, you can't ride this" is rolling straight onto a carousel with everyone else.

Who's the person in your life who saw a door that wouldn't open — and decided to build a new one?

Jeffery & Lindsey Ellison are getting very close to welcoming their "embaby!" Today was a day to shower them with blessings for their little blessing, & I was honored to bake a rainbow themed cake (the smaller one is a special gluten free version, just for Lindsey!). May God continue to meet and exceed all your prayers. 🩷
Also, this baby's is going to be born on my birthday!😉

I love taking an inspiration picture and some notes and elevating it to meet (and hopefully exceed) the expectations of a client. For Bridgette D. Walley, I used the photos she sent of the banner to get the color scheme, the goose cropped from their invitations, and the inspo pic for cake design. A Silly Goose will be arriving soon, and I pray it is a healthy, happy little one! Best wishes, Meagan & Dawson! Thank you again for your order.
