Kids need to be kids. But that doesn’t mean their time has to be wasted.
They need to laugh.
They need to play.
They need to be silly.
They need moments where they forget they’re even learning.
But here’s what I’ve learned after years of coaching children:
The best kind of fun has a purpose behind it.
At School of Jiu-Jitsu, sometimes it looks like they’re just playing a game.
But underneath the game, we’re teaching them to react.
To solve problems.
To become comfortable with pressure.
To communicate.
To compete.
To win and lose.
To trust their teammates.
And maybe most importantly… we’re building a relationship with them.
Because before a child listens to your instruction, they need to feel connected to you.
So yes—we play.
We laugh with them.
We make Jiu-Jitsu exciting.
We make them fall in love with the game, the challenge, and the community.
But we’re intentional about it.
They think they’re playing.
We know they’re growing.
As parents and coaches, maybe the question isn’t, “Are our kids having fun?”
Maybe it’s:
“What is their fun teaching them?”
