"Hey Dad/Mom/Granddad/Grandma, let's go play a round of golf."

These are the magic words every golfer craves to hear. At The Sarge, this is what we’re all about: good times, zero pressure, no judgment, and a score that just doesn't matter when you’re out on the course with someone you love.

Don’t procrastinate…These moments are meant to be cherished. After all, don’t we all wish we could go back for just one more round with that special someone we’ve lost?

Course Update:

High humidity and afternoon rain showers have the course looking lush, green, and playing a bit longer than usual. End of last week, the agronomy team applied fertilizer to stimulate growth, followed by top dressing the greens on Monday. The recent rain has helped soak everything in, and it won't be long before the greens look and play better than ever!

Want to learn more about why we top dress? Check out this quick, informative USGA Video on Top Dressing.

The Money Shot…The golf staff, guests, and everyone waiting on closest-to-the-pin $$$ love watching shots come into the 9th green. As we eagerly wait for someone to drop an ace, we see it all—shots landing on the green, splashing into the pond, or taking off right into the woods or left onto the 7th tee. Wherever your ball ends up, we’re just glad to see you taking your shot.

Course Conditions…Sand, sand, and more sand. If there’s one thing we’ve got plenty of at The Sarge, it’s sand. Besides taking a bunch home in my shoes and socks, all 9 bunkers on the course have been topped off with new sand. Huge shoutout to Jackson Simcox and Mason Reed for helping me tackle my “special projects.” (Please leave rakes in bunkers)

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and apparently these broadleaf w**ds think they're built like Tony Atlas. The putting surfaces are looking way better, but we put down a 3rd herbicide application on Monday to keep wiping them out and let the healthy turf take over.

The crew also cleared out the overgrowth in the trenches (definitely sounds cooler than “ditches”). Between that and all the rain, everything is lush, green, and keeping Shane on his toes with the mower.

New Gear…Fresh Sarge logo caps just landed. Right now, you can grab a new Level wear hat and super comfy t-shirt combo for just $50. Time to gear up and be proud to represent The Sarge.

Food Truck Saturday…You asked, we delivered! Not everyone plays golf, but everybody’s gotta eat. This Saturday (8/15) from 10 AM to 2 PM, one of my absolute favorites Mamma Mikki’s, is setting up shop at The Sarge. Pro tip: place your order after the 6th hole, and it’ll be hot and ready when you make the turn.
Even if you aren't playing a round, swing by, grab a bite (my favorite gyro 🥙 😋), and support her and the club. We’ll have plenty of seating set up inside and out. If we turn out a good crowd, we can start bringing in more food trucks—so come show some love and make it worth her trip!

How do you know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been? 🤔 ⛳

Check out this awesome hand-sketched rendering of The Sarge by Bob Causey from around 1961! Interestingly, some research credits Gary Player with the design—if anyone knows the real back story on that, we’d love to hear it! Drop your historical facts, memories, or old photos of the clubhouse, pool, and course in the comments below. Or, feel free to bring them by the golf shop so we can take a look! 👇

🛠️ COURSE UPDATES 🛠️⛳

Hole #3 Identity Crisis: She’s a Par 5 from the blue tees but drops to a Par 4 from the white, black, and red. Either way, she can make your day sunshine and rainbows or leave you stuck in a ditch! 🌈🌧️🌱

Greens & Turf: The putting surfaces are looking great and getting better every day. Huge thanks for all the recent compliments—the crew really appreciates the love! A couple of inches of rain this week did wonders, and the fairways and tees are looking incredibly green and healthy.

Maintenance Details: The team is busy top-dressing sand on the tees, especially fixing up divots on the Par 3s ( #2 and #9).

Good news: the back/blue tees on #8 has filled in beautifully and is officially back in play! Thanks for your patience while that new grass grew. We also dropped some sand around the bridges and plan to replenish the bunkers this week.

Cart & Course Etiquette: We’ve removed most of the roped-off deterrents, trusting everyone to drive with caution. Please stay out of known wet areas, and avoid driving over common tee areas or too close to the greens. Also, please leave the rakes inside the bunkers going forward! 🏌️‍♂️

🚚 FOOD TRUCK SATURDAYS 🍔

We want to host food trucks here on Saturdays from 11 AM to 3 PM. You don't have to play golf to enjoy great food! If you know a local food truck we should invite, tag them in the comments or have them reach out to us directly! 🍟🌮

Risky Drives, and Big Smiles at The Sarge ⛳

Risking It on #8

To love or to hate #8? Are you taking iron off the tee to lay back for a full swing, or squeezing that driver into the narrow gap for a short wedge in? Grip it and rip it—you might lose a few, but you’ll find a few, too.

Course Updates & Maintenance

It’s been a busy week, and thank goodness for the recent rain! Here’s what the crew has been working on:

Greens: We completed our broadleaf herbicide application on Tuesday. Expect a little w**d discoloration over the next week as it takes effect.

Cart Paths: The team is filling in dips and valleys in worn, high-traffic cart areas. We're keeping things smooth—no need to wake sleeping babies or put extra strain on your L5 vertebra!

Tee Boxes: Tees are continuing to improve across the board. We're giving extra attention to #1 and #7 for those critical first impressions. Keeping cart traffic off #8 tee has made a huge difference, and #9 has been heavily sanded—healthy turf is already popping through and leveling out.

Next Up: We're shifting focus to #2 teeing ground. We’ll be redirecting cart traffic here soon, so keep an eye out for new signage.

Growing the Game

We had a wonderful visit on Wednesday from 12 young adults through the Agape Family Life Center in Hardeeville! For many of these teens, it was their very first time picking up a club.
A big thank you to Hannah Gostonczik (Program Director for The Congaree Foundation outreach program), our Kiwanis Club volunteers, and The Sarge team for teaching the basics. After learning key vocab and course etiquette, the group tried their hand at driving, pitching, chipping, and putting. (We’re still debating who earned the title of "Chip Master"!) It’s hard to say who had more fun—the kids or the instructors.
Reminder: Junior golfers under 18 always play for free at The Sarge. That’s what it’s all about!

Host Your Next Event at The Sarge’s Ballroom

We had the pleasure of hosting a 75th birthday celebration this week in the Ballroom! Planning a holiday party or fall gathering? Our Ballroom hosts up to 70 guests. We provide the tables and chairs—you just bring the food, decorations, and party spirit. Fall weekend dates are filling up fast!

Fore… #4…Are we going up and over with a high draw, the baby cut, or right through her? Shortest distance right?!? The Sarge’s many amazing Live Oaks offer challenges even to the best of player’s.

BTW…What’s up with the tees on #4, the white tees are behind the blue tees?

The Sarge mixes it up for a little variety. The blue tees are a 188 Par 3, where the whites tees play as a 276 yard Par 4. Both 9’s play as a Par 36, the 3rd hole plays as a Par 5 for the blues and white is a Par 4.

To add a little more variety, back by popular demand, we added the forward or ‘Black’ Tees. No excuses to get every club in the bag a little dirty.

The putting surfaces are looking green and feeling soft so Shane asks you to please fix your pitch marks (and one other). Team is going to apply and water in a herbicide on Monday which will kill off that annoying broadleaf. Half a step back to take two steps forward.

The teeing grounds are the main focus for the maintenance team this week. #1 and #7 Tees are really starting to green and soften up. Players will see signage around the #8 tee as we try to establish a teeing area again and fill in the blue tee box. We raised the canopy and fixed the path behind #7 and #8 tee to help funnel traffic. We also added sand to the tees on #9. We should see some good growth popping up over the next couple of weeks. Getting better everyday at ‘The Sarge’.

We have also had some key employees move on from The Sarge. Brandon Meade who has done tremendous job as GM leading the Recharge of the Sarge over the past 3 years went off and got himself married. He and his wife are going back home to NC where he will continue his career in golf at Diamond Creek. Greg Carlin who was with us a year is headed to Scotland on extended vacation and going to “really” retire with his grandchildren upon his return. Chris Arzillo who has been with The Sarge 7-months but grew up on The Sarge is getting a real job and putting that Accounting degree to use. We thank them and wish them well for their support and love of The Sarge.

The Sarge's Lucky #7...where good rounds fade away.

In the midst of battling the heat, The Sarge's maintenance progresses. Although the current weather conditions are not suitable for herbicide application to control broadleaf on the greens, we effectively applied preventative measures for pythium and nematodes.

The team is set to undertake teeing ground enhancements over the forthcoming weeks. Come on out and see the improvements.
