Inland Empire HO Raceway

Inland Empire HO Raceway was established in the early 2000s while growing the Southern California HO racing group.

My first trip to the fray in Ferndale was 2003. I have fielded teams at the fray and now live in New Mexico. Inland Empire HO Raceway is an entity dedicated to racing HO scale Thunder Jet slot cars from the mid 60's to early 70's in fray style. The Fray in Ferndale, CA is the race which started fray style racing. It is known in other geographic regions (Kansas City, MO and the East Coast) as super stock. Rick Phillis and Rick Machado were the founders of fray style slot car racing. The Fray in Ferndale is held annually in late February or early March. Inland Empire has fielded a team at the fray about 4 years since 2003. Mickey Hurtado is the founder of Inland Empire HO Raceway.

Got my wide track front ends installed. I added rear hubs and silicone tires . I’ll be able to get shoes prepped, profiled and travel limited now. Message me if you’re interested in a chassis. Click on the pictures for more information.

Nearly finished getting these dialed in. I’ll add the wide track front end to my orange 🍊 chassis. Then I’ll add .162” diameter Scale Engineering hubs to the rear of both with HO Tires Direct C1 compound .333” slip on silicone tires. I’ll be able to prep, profile and limit travel of the pickup shoes after that. These are nearly complete and are super smooth, fast and quiet.

Picking out armatures. The tighter your tolerances around the cluster and armature shafts, the smoother your ride and the longer your gear train lasts. I’m pulling out the armature with the crown gear on the shaft. The crown gear has a piece of reflective tape for my digital tach.
I’ll replace it with armature that’s on standby in the picture. Going for maximum rpm @ just 12 volts.

I got the RT-HO top plate gears pressed on. First time on the power sounds smooth as silk @ 12v

I laid out the pickup shoes and springs are set up on the chassis. I need to spin up my armatures in these chassis. Killer Bees have been added and I’ll be spinning up some 16+ ohm TFX armatures to find some contenders.

Picking out some coated axles for the next couple builds. Adding in the Wizzard crown gears. Spacing of the rear axle is important in allowing the most speed and least resistance. Zero back lash is the goal along with some buttery smoothness. No lateral movement in the rear axle, even after the crown gets some relief against the softer brass pinion gear. ⚙️
