The scale is the least accurate way to track fat loss. True weightloss has to be our bodyfat, not fluid, bowel, or muscle and unfortunately that's what our bodies like to give up first. So it's important that body composition goals be the priority, actual lean muscle mass gains and bodyfat % decreases

2️⃣ Weightloss does require an energy deficit. Energy burned has to be greater than energy consumed. Trying to achieve that with elimination diets or extreme caloric restriction just slows metabolism and we burn less fat. Better to create a deficit through increased daily energy expenditure (steps) and weightlifting which increases metabolism as lean muscle is rebuilt

3️⃣ As we get older, it's important to prioritize working out smarter...not harder. If you enjoy a high intensity workout...Go for it!! But know that's not the best weightloss strategy and can lead to injuries and burnout. Increase the intensity in your strength workouts r progressive overload to push metabolically and maximize muscle mass gains

4️⃣ Let's just say that it's never going to happen. A highly defined or bulky physique like what we see in media requires intense levels of consistency and focus, a very specific diet and supplementation and rigorous lifting regimen designed to produce that result. It's not a natural state for a body and will never happen to anyone doing a normal strength and weightloss program even if they are 100% consistent.

5️⃣ Body composition goals are a work in progess...Really. At a year, most people training 2/3X weekly, are active and practicing a sustainable and balanced diet are just hitting their stride and will need 2 or 3 years of that consistency before they are at an ideal goal. That's the unvarnished truth and anyone telling you different is selling you something

It's always interesting to hear what keeps our members around for years, and it's no surprise that just like consistency is such a big part of your success in your fitness journey, it's also the reason for ours

Let's be real, if you're over 30, a programmed strength regimen is an absolute must and should be the foundation of your fitness routine. The amount of muscle mass we carry and hold on to as we age is linked to every major marker of good health and the best way to prevent disease, degeration, obesity and loss of movement.

So finding a program that is science based, customized to your body and goals AND is something you truly love is a tall order. But Stronglife has been doing just that for 20+ years in Utah. It's the most important life lesson you can practice...and it does take practice.

It's like Magic✨️

We know that in order to stick with something, it has to resonate in both heart and mind and make some sort of measurable difference in your life, especially if it's hard work and physically challenging

It's about learning to love the daily thing and really, truly feeling that way so that your motivation has nothing to so with whether you show up

At Stronglife, we want to help you find that path in yourself and for yourself cuz we all know now that we gotta do this stuff and take care of ourselves and rebuild our strength as we age so we can do all the other things we love to do too and protect both our physical and mental health

So Stronglife programs are fun and joyful and connective, but they also get sustainable results that are specific to you and exactly what you need and want now, which gives you the best of both worlds

I’m sorry but…

If you find yourself saying “well it’s been 2 weeks and I’m not seeing any progress so time to try something new”

Here’s how to support your body and feel amazing after 40!

✨Stop the excessively low-calorie diets

We’ve coached hundreds of clients in exercise and nutrition, and trust us when we say this never works long-term. Getting enough calories to support your metabolism, your hormones, and exercise will help you make more progress and feel better, which in turn will lead to healthier, more sustainable habit-building. You can lose weight and get toned without a crazy low calorie diet!

✨Prioritize weight training

If you’re trying to lose weight and get toned through cardio alone, you’re doing it wrong. Cardio is great for heart health, but if you’re looking to lose body fat and look more toned, then weight training should be your priority. Building muscle increases your metabolic rate and improves all kinds of health markers, especially blood sugar regulation!

✨Walking will completely change the game

People underestimate the power of consistent, low-intensity cardio like walking. Whether you can get in one long walk or a few short walks throughout the day, the benefits are there! These benefits include: more daily calories burned, better blood sugar and appetite regulation, and improved muscle recovery!

✨Eat a protein-rich breakfast

Too many of you are skipping breakfast and waiting until the end of the day to eat. But eating a filling, protein-rich breakfast helps with blood sugar control for the rest of the day, helps support a healthy metabolism, improves gut health and motility, and prevents cravings and excess snacking in the evening.

✨Get enough sleep

We’ll never stop hammering in the importance of sleep! We know that sleep can be tricky, especially around menopause. But shooting for at least 7 hours of sleep at night helps with recovery, hormone balance, and appetite levels during the day. A poor sleep schedule can sabotage all of the hard work you’re putting into other areas of your health!

I believe when you’re truly listening to yourself and you put those aligned intentions out there, very often you call in exactly what you need

It's really fun to see our clients progress over time

Arianne has been training with us for about a year and this is her pulling #245 on deadlift

It's new pr for her and we love to celebrate the wins
PRs (personal record) are one way we measure progress and strength in our clients

Knowing a 1R Max gives our trainers a good idea of what the load capability on a push or pull is for that person

It's then used to determine load in different lifts based off of percentages of that person's maximum push or pull

This ensures daily and weekly programming is challenging to that individual and includes progressive overload

But I will say it's also a fun "flex" to challenge yourself and see what you can really do in terms of overall strength along the way🏋

Practicing good form in lifting is not an exact science, simply because we're all built differently, move differently and have different imbalances and strengths

Small significant form changes can make huge differences in our ability to lift correct loads and reach correct depths in our lifts

Foot/ankle position, lat and core engagement, shoulder placement and stance, knee and hip tension, and joint movement allow us to lift effectively and

There’s a lot we’ve learned over the past 20 years teaching our clients over 40 how to rebuild strength and make training and fitness goals longterm habits...

To break it down, here’s what’s most important

1️⃣ Strength training after the age of 40 has to be specific to you and take into account both individual goals, physical limitations/injuries and your strength and fitness level to be effective
2️⃣ Consistency beats intensity every. single. time. There are no quick fixes or 12 week programs that will rebuild strength and muscle mass that fast. It just takes time and good, safe programing that includes progressive overload to really move the needle.
3️⃣ There’s an ebb and flow to fitness and those who stick with it longterm, understand that. Instead of quitting when life throws a curveball, they ease up on themselves, decrease intensity and just do what they can. They focus on joy, connection and fun in their workouts and allow for differences in frequency and “push” at times.
