Sparring is one of the best ways to refine new skills and keep your existing skills sharp. Not to mention so fun!

Students have been working two drills to find balance between speed and smoothness of ex*****on. First we work just on the entry for speed, as fast as you can do it well, then with the same throw do the entire entry and ex*****on as slowly as possible focusing methodically on each important aspect of the throw. Then reps of the whole thing aiming for a consistent speed and smoothness of ex*****on (shown in video)

Resistance training. Originally we would do these by holding the belt directly, but variations in the holders arm length and body weight make a big difference. Adding resistance bands around the belt makes this drill a lot more effective and ensures the holder won't get hit by a foot accidentally because their head can be further away from the uke.

Do you journal or do goal setting to focus your training?

Many years ago I spent a lot of time thinking about the best way to maximize the time on the mats and my ability to improve. I came up with a few simple things I would do that had a profound impact:

-Set one long term goal and a few short term goals to help reach the long term goal
-Long term goals should be aspirational
-Short term goals should be specific, measurable, and achievable (IE: Attempt Uchi Mata 5x each class during randori, this goal is specific and nearly impossible to fail, unlike a goal such as "throw person X with Uchi Mata which you may fail at over and over and get discouraged)
-After each class journal. What did you work on? What went well? What was challenging? What do you want to work on next class based on your results from this class? What changes to your short-term goals do you have? Rinse and repeat

Do you prefer this longer format or would like smaller videos in a series?

One of our favorite instructionals we've made on grip fighting essentials, got lots of additional updates to make and will be filming a second edition soon. Also, Sensei Casey finally got a hair/beard cut.
