DO YOU KNOW ANY PARENTS LIKE THIS?
Which one are you?

(1) The Sideline Coach:
This parent constantly yells instructions to their child during games, often contradicting the actual coach. This creates confusion for the player and undermines the coach’s authority.

(2) The Vicarious Hero:
Parents who try to live their unfulfilled athletic dreams through their children. They may push for elite participation or professional paths before a child is ready or interested.

(3) The Blamer/Excuse Maker:
Instead of teaching accountability, this parent blames officials, poor equipment, or other teammates for their child's failures. This can instill a "victim mentality" in the athlete.

(4) The Overbearing Perfectionist:
These parents have unrealistic expectations and provide constant negative feedback. They may start "coaching" immediately in the car on the way home, focusing solely on mistakes rather than effort.

(5) The Aggressor/Poor Sport:
This parent displays extreme aggression, including yelling at officials, getting into arguments with opposing parents, or even physically confronting coaches. Such behavior sets a poor example and often leads to the parent being banned from games.

(6) The "Specialist" Pusher:
Parents who force early sports specialization or an overloaded schedule of year-round training. This "more is better" mantra often leads to overuse injuries and mental exhaustion.

(7) The "Helicopter" or "Lawnmower" Parent:
These parents try to remove every obstacle or conflict the child faces, such as complaining about playtime or team selection, which prevents the child from learning to handle adversity.

Keys To The Journey by Kala Gause, provides families with a step-by-step playbook to replace high-pressure, outcome-focused behaviors with a supportive framework that balances athletic passion with academic success and mental wellness.

Bad parenting in youth sports happens when we focus on the scoreboard instead of the student. Focus on building independence, balancing the books, fun & learning, and protecting their mental health. Let’s keep the game about the kids!

Hall of Fame Spotlight - Kevan Sheppard Jr. P’26, P’27, P’29

Coach Kevan Sheppard Jr. has built a legacy at Bishop Kearney defined not just by championships, but by opportunity. As head coach of the BK Girls’ Basketball program, he led the Kings to unprecedented success, eight sectional titles, two New York State championships, and 12 consecutive Section V Championship appearances, earning three Coach of the Year honors along the way.

But for Coach Shep, the greatest wins happen beyond the scoreboard. More than 30 of his athletes have earned full academic and athletic scholarships, and for the past decade every BK Girls’ Basketball senior has gone on to college tuition-free. His passion for mentorship, leadership, and education continues through his work with elite national programs and his own initiatives, empowering young people to see themselves as leaders on and off the court.

We are proud to honor Coach Kevan Sheppard Jr. for the lasting impact he has made on our students, our school, and our community. Congratulations on your well-deserved Hall of Fame induction!
