Real martial arts developed in the period of soldiers wearing armour and fighting on the battlefield.
All of our techniques derive from this period. However, during this period there was also guerilla warfare on mountain passes as well as on boats, etc. This required and created unique styles of fighting techniques and strategies necessary for successfully defeating the enemy, such as Ninjutsu.
The photo below is an example of sutemi waza ( sacrifice technique ) and possibly the beginning of the throw called Tomoe Nage. We can see this throw from its conception on the battlefield in armour called Yoroi Kumiuchi. After the Sengoku Jidai ( Warring states period ) it developed into Jujutsu and later modern Sports Judo. Recently, we see these techniques adopted by modern combat sports popular today such as Brazilian Jujitsu and MMA. First and foremost, we must remember that these techniques were developed for mortal combat with weapons on the battlefield in terrible life and death conditions.
The Bujinkan starts and learns from the past and thus is a complete martial arts study of history and the development of all realms of warfare.

“.....In a similar way, the schools' techniques were adapted to the region where they were developed (geography and nature of the ground). It is a fact that you don't fight in the same way in a muddy rice field, on steep slope of a rocky mountain, on a sandy beach, in a bamboo forest, or inside a house. The KUKISHINDEN school has kamae (fighting stances) that are very low and stable, this comes from the fact that one of the origins of this ryu's techniques comes from the navy (kuki suigun) and when you are fighting on a boat, stability is of the essence.”
