These last three days are going to mean more to me than I can probably put into words.
Three more days of walking into the gym, hearing the ball bounce, seeing familiar faces, joking around, competing, teaching, pushing each other, and getting the chance to coach kids who will always hold a special place in my heart.
When I first came here, Rockford was just a place on the other side of the world. I was thousands of miles away from my family, my friends, and everything that had always felt familiar to me. I grew up in a different country, with a different childhood, a different culture, and I even thought that speaking another language might sometimes be a barrier.
Little did I know that none of that was going to matter, because we all spoke BASKETBALL.
Basketball gave us a way to connect before we even really knew each other. But over time, it became so much more than that. It became conversations before and after workouts, laughs between drills, competition, lessons, memories, and relationships that had nothing to do with how many shots went in.
We genuinely cared about each other.
Somewhere along the way, Rockford stopped feeling like the place I moved to and started feeling like home. My home far away from home.
And that happened because of the people in this community. The families who trusted me with their kids. The coaches and schools that opened their doors. The parents who supported what I was trying to build. And most importantly, the kids who kept showing up, working, competing, laughing, and allowing me to be a small part of their lives.
I hope I was able to teach them a few things about basketball, but the truth is they probably taught me just as much about life. They reminded me why I love this game and why coaching became such an important part of who I am.
I came here thinking basketball would give me opportunities. I never expected it to give me another family.
So this last week feels different.
These aren’t just my last three days of training. They’re three final opportunities to share a court with a group of kids who helped make one of the most important chapters of my life so special.
One last week. Three more days. A few more basketballs bouncing in the gym.
And memories that I’ll carry with me wherever life takes me next. ❤️🏀
Rockford, thank you for welcoming a kid from Argentina with open arms and giving me a place that I will always be able to call home.
