Luton Park TT sits right in the roots of Michigan mountain bike racing.

It is a founding race in the Michigan Off Road Championship, a stop in the Boundless Grand Prix presented by Orsa Credit Union, and a day that benefits the Pitt Hopkins Research Foundation.

That is a lot of purpose packed into one winding loop of singletrack.

The Boundless Grand Prix presented by Orsa Credit Union

Beginner does not mean easy. It means the challenge is built to be approachable.

The Luton Park TT beginner race is one complete 7.8-mile lap with 525 feet of climbing and a 1:00 pm start. If you have been riding singletrack and wondering when to try your first mountain bike race, this is a very good answer.

You still get the clock, the course, the finish line, and the satisfaction of finding out what you can do.

The Luton Park Time Trial returns Saturday, August 22 in Rockford. Choose your challenge on the approximately 8-mile loop:

• Beginner: 1 lap, 7.8 miles

• Sport: 2 laps, 14.7 miles

• Elite/Expert: 3 laps, 23.2 miles

This is solo mountain bike racing stripped down to the good stuff. You, the trail, and the seconds you can earn.
