These beautiful wāhine competed at the 4 Days of Aloha in the Pacific Northwest Hapa Haole Hula Competition in Vancouver, WA last July, taking first place in the wāhine category. They captivated all who watched as they gracefully told the story of “Beautiful Kaua’i” & “Wai’anae” in a medley of two songs.

Rest in aloha Kumu Leina’ala. I will always remember you by your powerful ‘oli and chanting, your love for your daughter Breeze, and above all, your gratitude and love for Ke Akua. It was a privilege to learn from you, to pray for Breeze during her preparation to compete for Miss Aloha Hula, and to witness your honors at Merrie Monarch this year. Whenever I hear the mele Halema’uma’u, I will remember you. . Thank you for your sharing of hula with the world. The loss to the hula community is deeply and collectively felt. Until we all meet again… rest in aloha.

Wow, dancers. Nice work last night. Thank you for showing up and being ready to put on another awesome showcase. I’m proud of each and every one of you. Keep working hard. Thank you Roseburg Parks and Recreation for hosting and News Radio 1240 KQEN for tech. Thank you, Garret for being MC and mom for music duty. Thanks to all of the hula moms and wāhine hula backstage who helped with lineups, dressing, set up, and tear down. It all requires so much coordination and your participation is what makes our hālau great. I hope you had fun. Mahalo.
