In 1927, General Yang Sen sent a group to collect Li Qingyun, an herbalist said to be 250 years old. According to Yang’s account, Li declined the ride and walked the thirty kilometers into town, wearing out the officer sent to es**rt him.

My latest post follows Li’s remarkable life through mountain journeys, encounters with Daoist teachers, and visits with generals eager to learn his methods of longevity. Along the way are his teachings on breathing, Qigong, and keeping a quiet heart, plus a few stories about his humor and fondness for rice cakes.

☯️ Tai Chi Peng (掤) "ward off," is one of the eight fundamental energies (Ba Jin) in Tai Chi Chuan. It's the first energy encountered in the Tai Chi form and represents an outward expanding force that neutralizes incoming energy. Imagine a buoyant ball floating on water, effortlessly deflecting any pressure. This is the essence of Peng ☯️

While Peng is often associated with defense, it's not merely about blocking.
It's a dynamic energy that encompasses:
- Neutralization: Redirecting an opponent's force without directly opposing it.
- Sensitivity: Sensing incoming energy and responding appropriately.
- Structure: Maintaining proper alignment and posture to optimize energy flow.
- Connection: Maintaining contact with the opponent while subtly leading their force.

What Is the Brain Doing During Cloud Hands?

Cloud Hands is one of the most recognizable movements in Taijiquan. To an observer, the slow shifting of weight and circling of the arms may appear relatively simple. But a recent study suggests that considerably more is happening beneath the surface, particularly in the brain.

Researchers from Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and collaborating institutions studied 100 healthy adults while they worked with Yúnshǒu (云手), or Cloud Hands. Rather than asking participants to solve mathematical problems or perform some unrelated mental task while moving, the researchers compared three activities directly related to Taijiquan: watching Cloud Hands being performed, imagining themselves performing the movement, and physically performing it.

The researchers used functional near-infrared spectroscopy, or fNIRS, a non-invasive technique that measures changes in oxygenated blood near the surface of the brain. Unlike conventional brain scanners that require a person to remain relatively still, a wearable fNIRS system can record cortical activity while someone is actually moving. That makes it particularly useful for studying an activity such as Taijiquan.

Most people know the calf as the body’s “second heart.”

But the part almost nobody talks about is what controls how that pump works.

Your feet.

Every step creates a chain reaction from your feet through your calves and into the rest of your posture.

Change the way your foot interacts with the ground, and you can change how your calves are recruited with every step.

Wanna know how?

A great article!

A confiar.
