Get Off the Hamster Wheel in 2026!
Polls and surveys say that most people’s New Year’s resolutions involve health and money. Sound familiar? Is 2026 the year you are finally going to take your health seriously? Are you done making empty promises to yourself, family, and friends? Are you finished with the BIG, BOLD resolutions that never happen? Let’s lay out what actually determines your “health”… strength, nutrition, and recovery.

To make your resolution a reality requires committing to lifestyle changes. It takes more than joining a gym, walking, and eating more fruits and vegetables. Real lifestyle change involves intentional strength training, not just “working out” or signing up for a group fitness class. Get off the hamster wheel of endless, mindless, minutes and miles on the “dread”mill, high reps with low weight, or the latest and greatest diet. Does this recipe for failure sound familiar?

Take steps to build an actual foundation of physical strength featuring lean muscle, increased bone density, and more resilient tendons and ligaments. Unless you physically stress the human body with positive stimulation, it will not repair and rebuild. Whether you like it or not, the body LIKES to be challenged. Strength training is hands down the best bang for your buck (two resolutions in one)!

Here’s where failure can actually lead to success. Lifting with barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, plate loaded and selectorized machines in a progressive manner to a place of failure is how the body develops lean muscle and true strength. We’re talking about the kind of strength (aka functional fitness) that one uses every day… no more relying on a family member, friend, or neighbor to help with daily activities like picking up something heavy or opening a jar. The self-confidence and self-reliance that comes with strength will change your entire outlook.

Adequate nutrition goes hand in hand with building a healthy lifestyle. Optimal nutrition involves more than cutting fat, sugar, and sodium. Even more than simply eating more protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables… drinking less soda and more water, less alcohol and fewer stops at the drive-thru. Fine tuning your nutritional needs means learning what your body needs. This might require working with a functional medicine doctor or a registered dietician. Bloodwork in the hands of a knowledgeable professional can make all the difference and give you the best possible odds of achieving your resolution. Check out eatrightgeorgia.org, a very informative website of Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (GAND). Several of Roswell Barbell’s members, including Coach Callahan, have had success with Body Science RD (bodysciencerd.com).

Unfortunately, heavy lifting and sound eating without recovery will not produce the results you’re after. Quality sleep is the foundation of good health. We’ve all read the articles telling us to ditch the blue screens earlier in the evening and to refrain from jumping on our phones first thing in the morning… stop eating and drinking before bed etc. There are numerous watches, rings, and apps that can help you track and measure the REM and deep sleep that determine your sleep quality. It is a process but well worth the investment. Fortunately, strength training and eating right are instrumental to getting a good night’s rest.

Back to your New Year’s resolution of improved health…none of this can or will happen unless you are intentional about your lifestyle. Changing one or two habits can be helpful, but are not likely to achieve real results. True “health” requires commitment and dedication. Get stronger, feed your body appropriately, and allow for the rest and recovery that your body requires.

Here’s wishing you a HEALTHY Happy New Year in 2026!
