⚡ DON'T LET THEIR 94 MAKE YOU ASHAMED OF YOUR 93

I'll admit it—I've been slacking a little on our VOLT Minutes this summer! Starting in September, we're back every week. ⚡

But I recently read about the Last Soul Ultra in Germany and had to share this one.

Every hour, runners complete a 4.17-mile loop. Make it back in time, and you keep going.

After nearly FOUR DAYS, only two remained: Mark and Ello.

Both completed 93 loops—nearly 388 miles.

Then Ello couldn't continue.

Mark completed one more loop and won.

Think about that.

Ello ran for 93 hours and nearly 388 miles...and technically finished second.

We have to be careful not to teach our kids that someone else's achievement somehow makes theirs smaller.

There will always be someone who runs farther, scores higher, jumps higher, or wins the trophy.

Two reminders this week:

1️⃣ Praise the performance, not just the placement. Ask: "Are you proud of what you gave?"

2️⃣ Don't compare their 93 to someone else's 94. Someone else's success doesn't erase yours.

Our kids don't always have to finish first to be proud of how far they've gone.

Don't let someone else's 94 make you ashamed of your 93.

Something pretty amazing happened over this weekend.

Our son has been learning and participating in our Courage Season at our Glenville location and suddenly, we're watching him look for opportunities to be more courageous.

First, he let us pull out a loose tooth. If you have kids, you know this is basically torture. 😂 His response?

“I’m brave.”

Then he climbed an 8-foot rope swing and launched himself into a lake. My wife and I were convinced there was NO WAY he was doing it.

He did.

But the moment that impressed us the most? One of our floats drifted away and another family picked it up and put it on their boat. Without us saying anything, he calmly walked over to complete strangers and politely asked for it back.

My wife and I just looked at each other.

Who is this kid?!

And that's when it hit me.

When we repeatedly teach kids what courage looks like, they start seeing themselves as courageous.

Two things to try this week:

1️⃣ Name It. When your child does something uncomfortable: “That was courage.”

2️⃣ Remind Them. Before something scary: “You've done courageous things before. You can do this.”

This is exactly why we built our Life Skills curriculum.

We're not just teaching Courage.

We're helping kids believe: “I am courageous.”

As we continue our season of Courage...let's think about it?

If you asked most people what courage means, they'd probably say:
"Being brave."
"Facing your fears."
"Doing hard things."

Those are all true.

But this week, I've been thinking about how to explain courage to my own kids.

Here's the definition I came up with:

Courage is choosing to do something before you feel completely ready.

Think about it...

The first time they ride a bike without training wheels.
The first sleepover.
Walking into a new classroom.
Trying out for a team.
Raising their hand in class.

Were they ready?

Probably not.

But they did it anyway.

That's courage.

As parents, we often celebrate when our kids succeed.

But what if we celebrated the moment they simply tried?

This week's challenge:

1️⃣ Catch Courage.
When your child attempts something they're unsure of, stop and point it out:
"That took courage."

2️⃣ Praise the Attempt.
Whether they succeed or not, remind them that courage isn't about the outcome—it's about being willing to begin.

Confidence comes after courage.

It almost never comes before it.

Let's spend this week helping our kids recognize that every small step into the unknown is another opportunity to grow.
