With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we share the devasting news of the recent passing of Benjamin “BluRay” Santos.

BluRay, Coach Mitts’ son, was the reason she founded our league. Many of you have had the pleasure to know him, skate with him, and see the way his energy lifts the spirit of those around him. He was an outstanding derby athlete and leader on the junior team that went on to achieve his dream of playing with Austin Anarchy as an adult skater.

His lighthearted and kind demeanor, along with his many talents shone bright in every interaction.

BluRay continued to be involved with the league as time allowed, including stepping in to help officiate recently at our Summer Smash tournament; his cheerful and generous spirit will be missed and remembered by all.

We send our love and support to Coach Mitts’ family during this tragic time. Our entire derby community grieves with them and hopes they can find strength and comfort in his memory to help carry them through this unimaginably difficult time.

Our hearts go out to all who knew him and had the joy of calling him friend. If anyone is in need of extra support at this time, please reach out. We are happy to offer resources and whatever additional support our league can offer. We respectfully ask that you give the family space at this time, and share your condolences and messages of support and fond memories in the comments rather than directly contacting the family as they begin to process this loss. Your love and support is so very appreciated.

A memorial fund and website is in the process of being set up; we will share that later for those interested in making a contribution. A celebration of life is being planned for late next week, details of which will be included on the memorial site.

Rest in peace, BluRay. You made such a positive impact on your derby community - far and wide. You are loved and already missed by so many. 🩵

What an exciting match between legacy JRDA skaters (average 18 years old) and Texas All-Star adults - whose age range I won't disclose, but lets say they were JRDA once upon a time....
