Team Oceanpact–Viking of Brazil, with Haroldo Solberg, Mario Tinoco, Gabriel Silva and Carlos Robles, is the 2026 J/70 World Champion after five demanding days of racing at Clube Naval de Cascais in Portugal.

The 100-boat fleet representing 26 nations completed 10 races from September 8–12, with one discard. Challenging conditions throughout the Championship, including strong wind and waves, tested every team’s resilience, stamina and consistency.

Oceanpact–Viking finished the Championship at the top of the leaderboard with 86 points, 16 points clear of the runner-up. The Brazilian team put together the steadiest performance across the series to claim the J/70 World Championship title. The overall podium was completed by Luis Bugallo Arriola and Team Marnatura of Spain in second with 102 points, followed by John Heaton and Empeiria of the United States in third with 114 points.

Team Marnatura delivered an exceptional Championship, combining its second-place overall finish with victory in the Corinthian Division. Bugallo Arriola sailed with Enrique Freire Faria, Yago Osuna García, Alfonso Crespo Rodriguez and Ignacio Albo. The Corinthian podium was completed by Victor Mesterton and Liquid Sun of Finland in second, followed by Andres Ducasse and Ducasse Sailing Team of Chile in third.

In the One-Pro Division, Onur Erardag and Team Nautique Yachting of Turkey took the title, sailing with Yasar Doga Arobas, Nejat Arda Baykal and Firat Sahin.

The Mixed-Plus Division was won by Joan Cardona Mendez and Yupi of Spain, with Pilar Filgueira, Fatima Barreras, Joel Perez and Carlota Gala.

Margaret McKillen of Magatron (USA) earned the top female helm of the Championship.

The 2026 J/70 World Championship brought together sailors from across the globe, with teams representing Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United States.

With five days of racing in demanding conditions, the 2026 J/70 World Championship was a true test of the qualities required at the highest level of one-design racing: resilience when conditions became difficult, stamina through a long series, and consistency when every point can matter.

Day 3.

Another day, another chapter in the J/70 World Championship Cascais 2026.

Strong competition, spectacular sailing and unforgettable moments defined Day 3, as the fleet continued to battle it out in the iconic waters of Cascais.

It was a challenging day for the frontrunners at the J/70 World Championship in Cascais, as moving the racecourse closer to the shore resulted in a very different scenario to that experienced in previous days. Lighter winds and almost no swell reshuffled the battle at the top of the fleet.

With six races now completed, the first discard also came into play, adding another twist to the increasingly tight overall standings. Spain’s Luís Bugallo was among those who paid the highest price, surrendering the overall lead and dropping to third place. Brazil’s Haroldo Solberg seized this opportunity, posting an eighth and a fifth to regain the lead he had held at the end of the opening day (27 net points). American John Heaton moved into second place overall (30 net points).

Among the day’s standout performers was Algarete, skippered by Alejandro Pérez of Mexico, who delivered an excellent and remarkably consistent performance with two third-place finishes. Those results moved the team into the overall top ten and made him a particularly relevant voice through which to assess the day’s racing conditions, saying, “It was an amazing day. We had great conditions out there, managed to get a couple of good starts and handled the fleet well on the downwind legs. The inside course is much more shifty, so even if you don’t have the best start, there are plenty of opportunities to gain places by using the shifts and the puffs coming from the right. We really enjoyed racing in those conditions. Now we’re inside the top ten, so the goal is to keep pushing, try to get into the top five and put ourselves in a position to fight for the win.”

With the battle for the top positions still wide open, the J/70 World Championship is heading into a decisive stage in Cascais. Racing continues on Friday, with two more races scheduled.

Spain’s Luís Bugallo has taken the overall lead at the J/70 World Championship after a demanding day of racing off Cascais, where a strong northerly breeze and building Atlantic swell put boat handling, speed and crew work to the test. At the helm of Marnatura, Bugallo delivered one of the most consistent performances of the day. A fifth-place finish in Race 3 followed by a third in Race 4 was enough to move the Spanish team to the top of the leaderboard with 20 points.

Luis Bugallo said, “It was a pretty windy day and definitely a good one for us. We didn’t have our best starts, but we managed to recover well and put ourselves in strong positions. In the last race, especially, we had a really fast first downwind, and that helped us get right back into the fight. We made a big bet on preparing for these conditions, so now the goal is simply to enjoy the week and see what comes. The J/70 is an incredible Class to race in — you’re competing against some of the best sailors in the world, and with a fleet of this size, the level is extremely high. It’s great to be part of it.”

Brazil’s Haroldo Solberg, who started the day in the overall lead, slipped to second after posting a 17th and a fourth. He now sits on 31 points. Fellow Brazilian Bruno Bethlem completes the provisional podium in third, with 38 points after four races. Clube Naval de Cascais sailor Diogo Pereira moved up to fourth overall after two solid finishes, sixth and eighth, in the day’s races. Close behind is reigning Portuguese National Champion Tiago Morais, now fifth overall. After a 20 in the opening race of the day, Morais bounced back strongly in the second, taking an impressive second-place finish to keep his campaign on track.

Racing at the J/70 World Championship continues on Thursday with two more races scheduled. The forecast suggests another testing day off Cascais, with strong breeze and Atlantic swell expected to once again challenge the 100-boat fleet.
