We teach confidence, discipline, practical self-defense, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a welcoming environment where students of all ages can learn, grow, and challenge themselves. Owner Paul Lombardi is a fifth degree Black Belt in Ken-Ryu Kenpo and Wo Zhu Ken- Ryu Karate. Paul has a Master Degree and has been a police officer for sixteen years.

🎬 MOVIE TRIVIA WINNER!

Apparently we should just rename this “The Allison Curran Movie Trivia Invitational.” 😂

This week’s movie was Titanic, and Josie once again pulled Allison Curran as our winner — two weeks in a row! 🏆🏆

We did make a little progress this week though…

You can learn punches anywhere.

You can learn kicks anywhere.

You can learn how to grapple in a lot of places.

The thing that's harder to duplicate is the people you end up doing all of that with.

Somewhere along the way, the people you sweat with, get beat up by, learn from and laugh with become a pretty big part of why you keep showing up.

That's one of our favorite things about WMA.

And judging by some of the people around here...

Apparently we'll let just about anybody in. 😂

BJJ is a strange hobby when you really think about it.

You voluntarily spend your evening trying to solve problems while another human being is actively creating new problems for you.

You finally figure something out.

Then somebody better than you immediately exposes the next five things you don't know.

And somehow...

you can't wait to come back.

That's part of what makes jiu-jitsu different from a normal workout.

There's always a problem to solve.

A position to understand.

A technique to improve.

A person whose game forces you to learn something different.

You can train for years and still leave class thinking:

"Well... apparently I need to work on that."

😂

That's BJJ.

And that's probably why so many people get hooked on it.

There are plenty of ways to exercise.

Walk on a treadmill.

Ride a bike.

Lift weights.

Take a fitness class.

They're all good.

But one of the things we like about martial arts is that while you're getting the workout, you're also learning something.

That's a big part of what we're building with daytime SGS at WMA.

You're moving.

You're working.

You're learning striking.

You're learning how to grapple.

You're learning escapes and control.

You're learning practical self-defense.

And because you're concentrating on what you're doing, sometimes you don't realize how much work you're actually getting until class is over.

You don't have to be a fighter.

You don't have to already know martial arts.

You just have to be willing to learn.

SGS — Strike. Grapple. Submit.

Tuesday — 9:30 AM
Saturday — 10:00 AM

One class each week — $75/month
Both classes — $99/month

We're building our first group now and our goal is simple:

We’re a couple days late with this one. Between Labor Day weekend, running around, and Josie’s lacrosse schedule, the Movie Trivia Department at WMA has been operating a little behind schedule. 😂

But Josie took a break from lacrosse practice today to make the official announcement.

This week’s movie was Moana, and the boat snack was none other than Hei Hei. 🐔

One of the underrated things about martial arts is that you spend a lot of time doing things you're not very good at.

You learn a technique.

It feels awkward.

You screw it up.

Someone shows you again.

You get a little better.

Then they teach you something else and the whole process starts over.

And that's actually a pretty useful thing to practice.

Kids experience it.

Adults experience it.

Black belts experience it.

There is always another technique, another position or another problem to figure out.

The goal isn't to never struggle.

It's to get more comfortable working through the struggle.

That's one of our favorite things about martial arts.

Nine days.

On September 14, we begin two new chapters at WMA.

Our new Kids Karate year and Confidence Program begins.

BJJ Foundations begins.

One is built around kids learning martial arts while practicing confidence, focus, discipline, respect and resilience.

The other gives new BJJ students a place to stop wondering whether they'd like jiu-jitsu and actually learn it.

Different ages. Different programs. Same rule:

You don't have to be good before you begin.

You begin so you can get better.

We realize something.

When we say we're starting SGS classes, most people have absolutely no idea what we're talking about.

Fair enough.

SGS stands for:

STRIKE. GRAPPLE. SUBMIT.

Paul developed the system by combining his traditional martial arts background with MMA and his experience in law enforcement and defensive tactics.

If MMA asks, “How do I become a more complete fighter?”

SGS asks a slightly different question:

“What skills would I want if I actually had to protect myself or someone I love?”

So we train across different ranges.

Striking.

Takedowns.

Grappling.

Ground control.

Escapes.

Submissions.

Practical self-defense.

Multiple disciplines but all based on an easily accessible form of self defense that anyone can master.

And because you're actually moving and training, you're getting a pretty good workout at the same time.

This isn't about preparing people for a cage fight.

It's about helping ordinary men and women become fitter, more capable and harder to overwhelm.

Our first daytime classes are starting September 15th:

TUESDAY — 9:30 AM

SATURDAY — 10:00 AM

$75/month for one class each week

$99/month for both

We're looking for the first 10 people who want to build this group with us.

A lot of people are interested in BJJ right up until they imagine walking into their first class.

So here's what we want beginners to know.

Nobody expects you to know the terminology.

Nobody expects you to understand every position.

Nobody expects you to keep up with someone who has trained for years.

Your job on day one is much simpler:

Show up.
Listen.
Learn a few things.
Ask questions.
Come back.

That's it.
