Two of our youth teams competed at this year’s Etchells United States National Championship this past weekend. Thank you to American Yacht Club for hosting!
The team has been training very hard to train each individual crew member in the Etchells class. Thank you!
This US Etchells Youth Team is embarking on an ambitious campaign in 2019-2020 to compete in multiple regattas with a mission to place as one of top Etchells youth teams nationally and internationally and help pave the way for emerging youth sailors. USEYT ended Cowes Week 2019 with a 4th place overall, coming in 1st place amongst the youth teams and successfully defending the Olin Stephens Trophy. Thank you to the combined efforts of the yacht clubs of Cowes for hosting an incredible event, and for the generous hospitality of David and Patsy Franks, and the Royal London Etchells Youth Academy!

USEYT moves up to fourth place overall in Cowes Week 2019 after a third and fourth place finish the past two days of racing. Looking forward to a final day of racing tomorrow!

This is new member, Bridget Groble. Bridget grew up sailing on Lake Michigan out of Chicago Yacht Club. Now, she is a sophomore ODU where she mainly sails dinghies. She also frequently competes in match racing and J/70 regattas. Bridget looks forward to the challenge of learning all the technicalities of Etchells.

This is new member, Ben Wilkinson. Ben is 23 years old, and has been sailing his entire life. He grew up sailing Opti’s and Laser’s out of Noank, CT. After junior sailing, Ben moved on to racing bigger boats, then eventually began working in the marine industry. He recently returned to SUNY Maritime College where he is still racing the big boat circuits, as well as sailing his Thistle as much as possible. Ben is very excited to see where we can take the US Etchells Youth Team, and to compete in the class this year.

This is new member, Charlie Hibben. Charlie is a freshman at Tufts University. He grew up sailing on Cape Cod, MA starting at age 8 on Optis. In high school, Charlie raced 29ers, C420s, Wianno Seniors, FJs, and a variety of other bigger boats.

This is new member, Chloe Holder. Chloe lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, but will be moving to the Boston area to sail for Tufts University in the fall. She has grown up sailing primarily Optis and 420s, but has also sailed Etchells alongside her father. Chloe was lucky enough to sail with Jim Cunningham’s team in the 2017 Worlds where they placed 4th! Chloe loves sailing the Etchells and is very excited to be a part of the team!

This is new member, Riley Freeman. Riley has been sailing for most of his life, although he did not start sailing competitively until the end of high school. He goes to school at the University of San Diego where he sails Etchells and other PHRF and IRC boats during the school year. Riley also has been participating in the Young American Sailing Academy.
