A hidden beach on Lake Tahoe! Skunk Harbor is a scenic cove along the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. When the other beaches along the eastern shore are jammed up with people, it’s possible to have a beach in Skunk Harbor all to yourself. There’s a small parking lot that had two open spots (of about 10) when we pulled up — compared to the mile of cars trying to get into Sand Harbor or any of the other beaches. The hike down to Skunk Harbor is one to 1.5 miles (depending on if you take any of the shortcuts) down 600 feet in elevation to the lake. You’ll arrive at a small footbridge, which leads to the remnants of the summer retreat built by millionaire, George Newhall for his wife, Caroline in the 1920s. Once you’re down here, you have your choice of several small beaches or rock outcroppings to make your home base. The crescent-shaped harbor has several small sand beaches surrounded by granite boulders and turquoise water. You won’t want to leave, partly because of the transcendent experience you will have at the water, but also because the hike up is much more of a challenge than the hike down. I did the hike with my wife, sister-in-law, and my niece and nephew who only complained on the way up — not on the way down. For me it was worth it to have a cove all to ourselves!

Hi friends! Welcome aboard!! This page is a means of reaching out, communicating and coordinating with my vintage, nature loving friends who might like to do some glamping together. The first glamping trip will take place in late August (specific date to be determined). It will be at the Samuel P. Taylor State Park, which is a beautiful campground in the redwoods near point Reyes, about an hour and a half from Sacramento. The site I have in mind can accommodate 20 people and up to 4 horses. I will be bringing 2 horses and my dog Khoikhoi. This is an experimental group but I think it’s going to be beautiful!
