Four years later, in a similar location and under similar weather to the Bannockburn's last voyage, the steamer Panama ran into trouble. She was up bound with a cargo of coal and the barge Matanzas under tow.
Battling the storm, the Panama's seams began to open up under stress. Near Ontonagon, her pumps became overwhelmed by the inrushing water. Fearing that she might founder, her Captain pointed her at full speed toward the mouth of the Mineral River. The beaching was successful and the crew was able to escape to shore in their yawl boats.
Their ship did not fare so well. Trapped on the rocks she was beaten mercilessly by the waves until she broke apart. The Matanzas had been cut loose near shore and was able to drop anchors and ride out the storm. The barge was later towed 14 miles into Ontonagon.
