Over the years, 15 skiable acres for cross country skiing and 150 vertical feet for downhill sports on "Mount Como" were developed with snowmaking and night lighting added. For cross country skiers there is now 6.7K of Pisten Bully-groomed, classical and skate-style trails. The octagonal golf clubhouse, built in 1986, serves as the winter chalet, a cozy base lodge, where ski and snowboard equipment can be rented and snacks are served. Lessons are taught every season by trained staff, many of whom learned to ski or ride at Como. Mount Como has survived for 50 years--despite changes in climate, funding and demographics--because of community support. During the snowsports season that extends from December through February, more than 800 students participate in programming at Mount Como. They come from the city’s diverse neighborhoods and surrounding communities. The Kinderski program is popular with families who bring children from ages four to six to experience their first time on skis. Beginner classes in downhill and cross country ski and snow boarding attract participants ranging in age from seven to 18. There are also terrain features on the hill for participants who want to hone their slalom racing skills or perfect their freestyle jumps. As boosters we believe that there is a need for outdoor winter snowsports programs for the St. Paul community. Our metropolitan region is one of the snowiest and coldest in the country. Snowsports are a great way to get kids to put down their electronic devices and get outside with others for healthy fun. The Como Park Ski and Board program provides a convenient and affordable place for kids to discover and enjoy snowsports. Our booster club works year-round to raise money for scholarships and equipment improvements. We want to eliminate financial barriers and provide as many scholarships as we can so that St. Paul kids who wouldn’t normally
play outside in winter or put on a pair of skis can experience the challenge and fun of snowsports.
