I had the privilege to be able to be an athlete for almost half of my life. Ranging from many sports such as Football,Wrestling, and Track. I wanted to find ways to improve training for these strength sports by furthering my education and obtaining a BS in Exercise Science and becoming a Strength and Conditioning Professional. Currently I am a Graduate Assistant Strength Coach at McKendree University and obtaining my MBA. I am blessed with this opportunity to gain more knowledge and experience with working with many NCAA D2 athletes. Training all types of athletes with different energy system demands and specific sports performance needs.

As I am now settling in from a three day weekend at the , reading all the posts, text messages , and overall feedback on how the meet went brought a smile to my face. I know I probably looked like I was having a brain aneurysm the entire meet, but wanting it to an amazing experience for everyone was on my mind the past three months.

Thank you for allowing me to use your awesome gym to host this event. I think their crew caught the iron bug after seeing a powerlifting meet!

I want to thank all the Sponsors who help promoted the meet ( )

The refs who helped over the entire weekend ( .abigail_7 .lifts )

The volunteer staff were rockstars( )

Also thanks to my girlfriend .bowen625 for helping out and putting up with my crazy hobby for the past 7 years 🤗. She enjoyed cheering on all the lifters

Also couldn’t be more happy about the crew for hitting prs, you guys follow the process, believed in it, and saw the results!

Thank you also for my good friend and for helping my lifters on game day!

Lastly, had an amazing second day with the team. You guys have grown so much since I left. Big things still happening with that program!

Time to not look at a barbell for a day or two lol, maybe start my plan to come out of retirement and get back on the platform!

Trained with on this beautiful Saturday at .

Worked up to 500x7 around a 7rpe~ for sumo deadlift. Fueled by sweet potato casserole and deviled eggs.

I told myself a month ago I need to get back on the platform and compete. It’s been almost two years, just need to do it to feel competitive with myself again. Until then, coaching is the priority.

on the other hand worked up at a tasty deadlift single 365lbs. She informed me she couldn’t even pick that off the floor during her last training cycle. Big things to come for that lady in two weeks 😉

The original three still stand after one year!
⠀⠀⠀
It’s been real, it’s been fun, and it’s been real fun.
⠀⠀⠀
Velo Athletics turns a year old this September 8th.
⠀⠀⠀
We stayed together through the growing pains of starting a gym from the ground up. Building networks with the club teams we currently train and love. Keeping our clients progressing towards their goals. As well, surviving and staying strong through these unknowing times during a pandemic.
⠀⠀⠀
Here is to another great year with these awesome people, and even better friends!

Remembering fun times.

A flash back to a Velo Lifter this past year, before the world went crazy.
⠀⠀⠀
At Caresse Gurno’s ( )last meet, she won the 63kg class on BW to tie the 2nd place lifter at 350kg total.
⠀⠀⠀
Game Day strategies are a skill set powerlifting coaches need to utilize as they advance in their career, and to improve their athletes competitive drive. Simple to advance tactics can make lifters place higher than expected.
⠀⠀⠀
It's also a skill set I learned from mentoring under great coaches. I thank one of my best coaching mentors, Coach Zac Cooper( )for learning these methods of game day coaching.
⠀⠀⠀
Caresse weighed in at 58.50 kg, so competed up a weight class. The goal still for the day was to increase her overall total, and walk away with some Pr’s.
⠀⠀⠀
The lifter close to her was predicted with a forecast total 12.5kg ahead before the squats.
⠀⠀⠀
As the meet went on, Caresse squatted 122.5(Pr), 70 Bench(matched meet best). The lifter close to her squatted 130kg and benched 75kg (12.5kg ahead).
⠀⠀⠀
Most of us know if you have been coaching or competing for many years, the meet doesn't start till the bar hits the floor. Caresse opening Deadlift was 142.5, the competitors opening deadlift was 127.5. Both hit their opening attempts, Caresse was now 2.5kg ahead for the lead (335 to 332.5).
⠀⠀⠀
Knowing Caresse was 4.3kg under the other lifters BW, I knew tying her total would get the gold medal for the state meet, but wanted to get Caress a PR in the deadlift. We made mid range attempts based on her plan to get to her third pull (7.5kg jumps).
⠀⠀⠀
Once the other lifter pulled her last dead at 145kg to total 350kg, Caresse needed to pull 157.5kg to tie and win. Which was also her third missed deadlift at her last meet. I had 162.5kg as an aggressive third if needed, but knew a PR pull to tie and win off BW would be that much sweeter! The video shows the rest.

We had our biggest fit60 to date since the reopening this Saturday!
⠀⠀⠀
The group was fun, and enjoyed the high intensity and energy we brought together. Also Corey won a free energy drink for killing it 62kcals on the rower in 3 min!

⠀⠀⠀
I’ll be teaching most Saturdays at 8am-9am at Velo athletics.
⠀⠀⠀
I’ll also be having a group strength and conditioning/ barbell group class 9-12pm(times may vary) for anyone interested in general strength and conditioning training, powerlifters, and anyone wanting to prepare for sport specific training.
⠀⠀⠀
Come check both out!
