With a change in the seasons comes arguably the best time to fish for one of my favorite local species, the ! 🐍. My client Ethan did an excellent job battling this beauty yesterday on a 4000 Sustain with 20lb X12 braid (a lighter setup I generally reserve for the flats!). The boys were . He then landed his very first tarpon on the next cast!
Besides the big Cobia and going 1/2 on tarpon, we also landed a bunch of slot sized redfish, trout, snook, all the jacks we could handle, got our butts kicked by some big grouper, and landed three XL sized black tip sharks up to 6 feet. Needless to say the bite is starting to fire off out there! 🍁 🎣 🔥

When the 🇺🇸 CAST Fishing Co™️ boys claimed they hooked over 20 TARPON on their TOPWATER plugs down in Charlotte Harbor that afternoon, and ask what you’re up to in the morning, you drop everything and send it! 💥.
Even though the first cold front of the year switched things up the night before and brought bluebird skies, we still managed to get a few insane topwater eats! The fish above launched head high out of the water on the strike! I also had another large tarpon obliterate my lure so close to the boat, my leader knot was already in the rod tip 😳 (I’m pretty sure the wetness on my pants was from the fish after it erupted just a few feet away but after it hit like that, I honestly couldn’t be sure haha).
We may not have hooked 20 like they did the day before but any day you catch a tarpon is a good day, especially when they blow up like that! It’s crazy how much better the fish react in an area that isn’t completely overrun with people like Tampa Bay 🤪.
If you guys haven’t tried the 🇺🇸 CAST Fishing Co™️ X12 casting braid yet, what are you doing??? I promise you that their 80lb will cast farther than whatever 65lb that you’re throwing, and will probably cast farther than whatever 50lb you’re throwing! It will outlast it too. READ CAPTION: Egmont Key State Park is being dredged…. again 💩🤢🤮☠️.

I understand if you irresponsibly built a house on the shifting sands of the beach and need to pile up nasty dredge sediment to try and save your investment. But dredging a natural state park where no one lives??? If you were trying to pick a place to dredge that would have maximum negative environmental impact, you couldn’t have picked a better spot.
To the untrained eye, so-called “beach re-nourishment” simply adds sand to the beach, and dirties the water for a bit. Not so bad right? WRONG!
Here are two reasons why this practice should be completely banned in our natural areas and parks.
1. Silt is proven by MyFWC Florida Fish & Wildlife and Mote Marine Lab & Aquarium to kill or otherwise stop the production of most types of plankton! (the critical base of the marine foods chain). During dredging, the silt that is spewed into the water can spread for literally miles! Though there might be a flurry of activity of baitfish feeding on dying plankton, it doesn’t take long for the silty water leave its mark. Soon the plankton are gone and nearly all of the other life (fish, birds, dolphins etc..) leave the area entirely! In my observation, this disruption can take months or even years to fully recover, depending on the severity. Don’t believe me? Go to the beach at Egmont key right now and tell me how much life you see.
2. The effects can also be felt on land. This disgusting practice completely smothers any unmarked sea turtle nests, invertebrates living in the sand (coquina shells, crabs, “sand fleas” etc…) all of which form the base of the food chain. It can take years for the sand to clean up and for these creatures to return. When was the last time that you went to a beach in Pinellas County and saw any coquina shells or were able to dig your hands where the sand meets the water and pick up any sand fleas? They are completely gone and so are all of the creatures that rely on them for food.
I hope everyone enjoys watching our government spend millions of dollars of our money to needlessly degrade one of our most beautiful natural areas, just to watch all of the sand be washed away

I’m not sure where all these fish came from while I was in Japan, but I am stoked that they’re here now! 🤩
It took some searching but once I located a bait ball (over an acre in size!) there were at least one hundred tarpon all in the mix, and they were chomping! We had tarpon boiling on baits all around the boat for hours with little to no care that we were there just a few feet away. It was quite the contrast from a few months ago when hundreds of reckless boats had the fish constantly running for their lives everyday. 😵‍💫

Not only was it awesome to witness so many relaxed tarpon behaving naturally in the absence of extreme fishing pressure (very rare in my area), it was pretty wild to see such a natural spectacle play out right in front of your face. To me, this is what it’s all about!

Tournament recap- WE DID IT! 🏆 !
So proud of my team Reel Housewives for battling through a tricky bite and pulling off the WIN in the “California Tuna Challenge” presented by Pelagic!!! 🤩 We made a bold move running over 100 miles to the north and were rewarded with the biggest tuna weighed in the tournament (not to mention a pretty epic SoCal striped marlin bite)!
It was truly a team effort to pull this off and I’m already stoked to get back out there next year with the crew to defend our title! Hopefully by then this monster El Niño will calm down and the big bluefin will be back in town 🤞. Either way, we’ll take it! 🥇 🏆 🍣

The winds have been up this season and sometimes you have to do what you have to do… Or you can just make your 1st Mate do it 😂👌.

Yesterday, the gods granted my boy Jeremy his BIRTHDAY wish when this beautiful fish decided to send it to the sand for birthday ! 🥳🏝️. Happy birthday bro!
P.s Notice how I said “the tarpon decided”. We only get shots like this when the tarpon swims up into the shallows on its own during the end of the fight and the opportunity presents itself to jump out of the boat and finish the battle from land. I wire the fish in the water and have a buddy waiting with a camera nearby before a quick release. Minimizing handling time is a must to protect the resource and I NEVER drag the fish anywhere just for a photo. I’m more than stoked to capture photos like this of the fish we all love, but only if the fish decides. 😎

This beauty was the largest fish landed of our five-day tarpon bender with the guys from 🤩💪! This chunky, pre-spawn mama put up a serious battle in heavy seas for mí nuévo amígo Sergio.
Thankfully, the trusty 7/0 offset heavy circle found its mark right in the “button” yet again, penetrating through the top of the fish’s bony mouth, allowing Sergio to apply maximum pressure throughout the fight. Sergio was able to subdue his new in less than 25 minutes! That’s the proper way to do it, both for you, and the fish. Congratulations on a great fish bro! 🤩 🎉
