The leaderboard tightened even further Friday at the J/70 Corinthian World Championship, hosted by Club La Pelle and Union Nautique Marseillaise, as the fleet completed one race before unstable conditions shut down further racing for the day.
After five races over the opening three days, the 88-boat fleet managed to add Race 6 to the series before a second attempt was abandoned following a dramatic wind shift just minutes into the race.
Friday’s conditions began with 6-7 knots of breeze, building briefly to 9 knots before easing back to 7-8 with a left shift challenging teams throughout the course. Andrew Loe’s Dime (USA) delivered a critical victory in Race 6 to move into the overall lead heading into Saturday’s finale. They now sit atop the standings with 19 net points, just one ahead of Alec Cutler’s Hedgehog (BER) on 20 points. Cutler is the reigning J/70 Corinthian World Champion after his victory last year in the USA. Sam Haynes’s Celestial (AUS) remains firmly in contention in third overall with 28 net points.
Denis Infante’s Euro-Voiles (FRA) placed second in Friday’s lone completed race, while Maria Bover Guerrero’s Let It Be (ESP) finished third. Under continued sunshine and warm Mediterranean temperatures, sailors once again enjoyed postcard conditions despite the light and unstable breeze. With the discard race fully in play and the leaderboard compressed at the top, consistency continues to prove decisive in the ultra-competitive fleet.
The Championship features 88 teams representing 20 nations: Australia, Bermuda, Denmark, Estonia, France, Great Britain, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Turkey and the United States.
Racing concludes Saturday in Marseille, where the 2026 J/70 Corinthian World Championship title remains very much up for grabs.
