Cultural Diversity in Health and Illness. Rachel E. Spector
During this last year I was caught off guard by the divisiveness in our culture. So many variables that played into division that filled our new way of life. A life full of politics, diversity, Covid, and the Cancel Culture movement.
I listened to heart broken mothers who felt like their children were angry with them for not understanding their points of views, and visa versa. I listened to people of a political party call people of the opposing party names, and disrespect the opposition by disregarding people all together for their views. I myself have gotten caught up in the G-force of this last year.
As I am currently learning about diversity and how it affects the health care system, some things stand out to me. Fear! Internalization! Self preservation! And a lack of understanding regarding generational differences, and other cultures and their practices. Did I miss one? Surelyā¦
Stopping for a moment to understand the audience in your presence. Maybe donāt hear what others or saying or see what they are doing by how it makes you feel. Internalization, and self-preservation. But instead, ask yourself where this person is coming from.
The blessing of being a US citizen is that we are a diverse country. However, itās human nature to stay within your own communities. We feel safe and accepted within our communities. Unfortunately this has caused cultural pockets around our nation. The lack of assimilation perpetuates these pockets. Making it harder to learn about eachother. I believe the biggest division in our society is FEAR. Fear of the unknown.

My boys adventures.
Originally Will was going to go to college in Bend, and then COVID hit. Our Governor took funds away from the Oregon Promise, and his dorm closed.
Will told us that he really didnāt want to do online schooling. We stepped out of his way. We did want him to go to Bend, have roommates, and live ācarelesslyā in a healthy way- The bonus is that my boys had some time together. Some great memories before Will moved to another state. My mamaās heart love seeing my kids enjoy each-others company. šøš·

What a year plus it has been. Empty nesting. Business transition. Learning that I have genetic mutations towards cancer, AKA Lynch syndrome. Thankful for the knowledge I have gained from my genetic testing. I was able to be proactive. Since February I have had skin biopsies, mammo grams, Nuclear medicine, endoscopy, colonoscopy, and recently a full hysterectomy. Now time to get back to normal. My mutations donāt define me. Thankful to be alive and kickin! Now time to live!

What stands out to me is the battle between stress, and weight loss.
For an example: Finally my client has her children old enough to be more independent, they may not need her as much. And her career can afford a personal trainer! Most likely she is a professional. Maybe even middle management somewhere. Sheās confident in every area, but just not in the area of self love. Our conversation always starts off confident, but ultimately winds up with some tears as she sits in the chair in front of me. I always wondered if itās because she is finally taking time for herself, or is it fear of doing something sheās never done before? Probably all of the above. It is scary. The thoughts she must have, āwonder if I failā. I mean she rocks her mothering, being a wife, daughter, boss, employee⦠Sheās kept the balls in the air for so many years. Maybe even feels like a hamster on a hamster wheel. Confused as to how she can be on top of everything else, but just not her body. She wonders how she got to this place. Now she feels like she cannot climb out of the hole she is in.
As much as I love throwing a good workout at someone, unless she understands what stress is doing to her hormones, I am just going to be jumping on that hamster wheel with her.
So here it is. Stress and hormonal imbalances.
We actually are estrogen dominant during peri and menopause. Let me explain. Usually our progesterone is low which which allows our estrogen to be high. Plus we have been exposed to environmental factors that increases our estrogen in our bodies. Now letās add stress to the equation.
Adrenaline dumps, you become insulin resistant, thyroid goes whacky. And you are estrogen dominant.
*Too much stress taxes the adrenal glands, compromising their ability to produce progesterone.
*Excess body fat absorbs and stores estrogen, increasing estrogen levels.
*A sluggish liver is unable to remove excess estrogen.
*Birth control and hormone therapy can add additional estrogen.
Being estrogen dominant can cause you to have insomnia, Fibroids, ovarian cysts, autoimmune disease, endometriosis, and more. Try running a household or business on little sleep.
SOLUTION! Eliminate stress and toxins!
