Another day of bikes, dirt, laughs, and kids getting better on two wheels!

Salida Youth Cycling riders recently worked on body position, balance, cornering, climbing, and descending—then put it all together on the trail.

“Getting better doesn’t necessarily mean going faster. It’s about looking ahead, choosing good lines, staying balanced, and riding with intention.” - Coach John Witherspoon

And just as important: being good teammates and good trail users. Another great week with this crew! 🙌

🚨 An important trail advocacy issue to have on your radar. The Forest Service is accepting public comments on the proposed rescission of the 2001 Roadless Rule through September 21.

‼️ The Roadless Rule has helped protect millions of acres of National Forest lands—and thousands of miles of trails—from permanent road construction and development.

Colorado has additional state-level protections for its roadless areas, but this is an important issue for trails and public lands nationwide.

📢 Check out IMBA’s post to learn more and make your voice heard before the comment period closes.

We’re celebrating National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 26, with a special day on the Monarch Crest—a bike-in trail project and lunch from Sweetie’s!

We’ll collaborate with our partners from The Colorado Trail Foundation, Central Colorado Mountain Riders, and Gunnison Trails to move piles of dirt from the new Crest reroute to the former trail, helping protect the surrounding tundra and support the landscape's recovery.

🚐 Free shuttle departs Absolute Bikes at 7:30 am (or drive to the Crest)
🚲 6-mile intermediate ride to the worksite with ~700 ft of climbing
⛏️ Trail work from 8:00 am–2:00 pm
💪 We’ll be carrying lots of bags of dirt!
🥪 Sweetie’s lunch provided
⛰️ Ride back after the project—shuttle riders can pick their descent back to Salida

Advance registration is required so we can plan for lunch and project logistics.

Space is limited, so grab your spot and spend National Public Lands Day giving back to one of our favorite local trails!

Salida Youth Cycling is officially underway! 🚵 We kicked off the first session with beautiful weather, lots of smiling kids, and plenty of time on two wheels.

Riders worked on the fundamentals—stability, balance, body position, and braking—before heading out to put those skills into practice on the trails. We’re especially excited to welcome several first-time riders this session!

A huge thank you to all of our volunteer coaches, and especially SMT Board Member and SYC Program Leader Coach John Witherspoon, for helping make this program possible. We can’t wait for another great season of learning, riding, and having fun on the trails! 🤘

Ever wonder what it takes to maintain a backcountry trail? Sometimes, it means hauling materials in by hand…two miles at a time. 💪🥾

Our crew and Strike Team volunteers recently joined forces with our partners at The Colorado Trail Foundation to haul materials up Browns Creek Trail in preparation for a bridge replacement that CTF crews will tackle in early September.

If you’re riding the V***r Trail 125 this year, you’ll get to see the finished product! The new bridge is part of the course, so keep your eyes peeled for a fresh new crossing along the way. 🚵

The Rusty Lung overhaul continues! 🪏 After an incredible workday with our volunteers, the SMT crew kept the work going—installing five timber check dams to slow water and catch sediment, plus new rock armoring at the wash crossing to harden and stabilize the trail. 🙌

The goal? Better drainage, less erosion, and hopefully a much less sandy ride. 🚲

Let’s give our Trail Crew, Mel, Kyle, and Kiersten a round of applause for all their work planning and executing this project! 👏

Another step toward a more fun and sustainable Rusty Lung!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our recent volunteer ShinDig on Rusty Lung. Together, 18 dedicated volunteers rolled up their sleeves and worked alongside our staff and Board to restore flow and refresh features on one of Salida’s favorite trails! The crew also completed some rehab work to restore and protect natural resources, so we can enjoy the public lands we love without loving them to death.

Here’s what we accomplished:
✅ Restored and revegetated 900 feet of trail corridor
🪨 Built a 36 square foot riprap wall to stabilize a washed-out bank
💧 Installed 2 erosion control structures to slow runoff and protect the trail
🥾 Maintained 0.7 miles of trail tread, leaving it smoother and safer for everyone
⛰️ Rebuilt 605 square feet of severely cambered trail to improve sustainability and user experience
🌿 Closed and restored 30 feet of social trail, helping protect surrounding habitat

Want a front-row shaded seat to Salida Bike Fest? Volunteer for a shift at the aid station during the Salida 76, the Banana Belt MTB, or both! 🚴🚵

Cheer on riders, keep the stoke high, and be part of the community that makes Bike Fest happen. It’s a fun way to connect with fellow trail supporters while helping raise funds for our organization!
