FIT FOR A KING! Wicomico High School is proud to announce Douglas King as the next Head Coach of the Tribe boys basketball program, following in the legendary footsteps of Butch Waller, who led the team for six decades and built one of the most respected programs in Maryland high school basketball.
A proud Wicomico High School graduate, King brings a deep-rooted legacy of basketball excellence, leadership, and service to the role. His connection to the Tribe runs deep—from standout player to twenty-four years as an assistant coach at Wi-Hi to a trusted mentor within the school community.
King starred on the court for Wi-Hi from 1994–1997, earning Bayside South Player of the Year honors in 1997. He continued his playing career at Cecil Community College before transferring to Salisbury University, where he competed from 1999 to 2002. During his collegiate career, King scored more than 1,000 points and remains among Salisbury University’s all-time leading scorers, currently ranked 27th in program history.
Following his playing days, King returned home to Wicomico High School and transitioned seamlessly into coaching. Over the past 24 years, he served as the JV Head Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach under Butch Waller, playing a key role in sustaining the Tribe’s culture of discipline, accountability, and competitive excellence.
Beyond the sidelines, King’s commitment to his alma mater extends throughout the building. He currently serves as Campus Patrol Manager, where he supports student safety, mentorship, and day-to-day operations—further strengthening his relationships with students and staff alike. In June of 2023, King was recognized for going above and beyond in his work during the school day at Wi-Hi and received Wicomico Public Schools' Extra Mile Award.
Now stepping into the Head Coach position, King brings together decades of experience, institutional knowledge, and a passion for developing young men both on and off the court.
“This program means everything to me,” King said. “Wi-Hi helped shaped who I am—as a player, a coach, and a person. I’m honored to follow Coach Waller and will continue building a program our players, families, and community can be proud of every night.”
King’s vision for the program centers on developing tough, smart, and selfless players while maintaining the high standards and pride that have defined Wi-Hi basketball for generations.
Wicomico High School administration and athletics leadership expressed confidence in King’s ability to lead the Tribe into its next era, citing his longevity, character, and deep understanding of what it means to wear the Wi-Hi uniform.
“Doug King is the embodiment of what Wi-Hi basketball represents,” said Stosh Schtierman, the school's Athletic Director. “His loyalty to this program, his deep understanding of our culture, and his commitment to developing young men on and off the court made him the clear choice to lead us into the next chapter. Doug has spent nearly a quarter century leading our players alongside Coach Waller, and there is no one better prepared to move the program forward.”
With a seamless transition rooted in tradition and trust, the Tribe basketball program turns the page to a new chapter—guided by a leader who has lived its values for over three decades.
CONGRATS, COACH KING! Let's Go!!💙💛
