Liny started practicing Shotokan karate in 1992. She started leading at the Burnaby dojo in 1996. Ohshima Sensei promoted Liny to godan in 2018, the first female in Canada to achieve that rank (and one of only 10 in the world under Ohshima Sensei). Liny has competed in many tournaments. In 2001 she entered the open tournament at Nisei Week and was named Best Competitor by Ohshima Sensei. She has led several special trainings and is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Canada Shotokan Karate Society. Liny helps lead the annual women's practice at the Shotokan Ohshima Dojo.
Joel started practicing Shotokan karate in 1985. He was the instructor at the University of British Columbia dojo from 2000. In 2010 Joel started up the Creekside dojo in Vancouver, BC and continues to lead there today. Joel has competed at many tournaments in Canada and around the world. He was a member of the winning Canadian team in 1996 at the Nisei Week tournament and has acted as a referee in many tournaments. Joel was promoted to godan in Vancouver in 2022 at the 50th anniversary of Canada Shotokan. Joel has led several special trainings and has been the Regional Manager for Canada Shotokan West since 2000.
