The coolest thing about training martial arts isn’t just learning one specific technique—it’s the transferability of the concepts. More than once have I picked up a weapon I’d never held before and walked away with a medal at a tournament. It’s not because I’m some kind of prodigy, it’s just because the mechanics are universal. Once you understand how your body generates power and how to manage distance, those lessons don’t stay trapped in one domain.

In fact, I just dropped a new follow-along class inside the Adventurer Combat Training community where we break this down. I took basic boxing mechanics and showed exactly how they translate into knife-fighting patterns. It’s the same motion, the same concept, just a different tool in your hand. When you stop looking at strikes and weapons as separate things, everything starts to click.

If you’re tired of collecting random videos and want to learn a system that actually ties these combat domains—striking, grappling, and weapons—together into a complete practice, come join us. We’re here to build real capability, one session at a time. Check the link in my bio to get started, or just comment “training” below and I’ll send you the link to join our community for free.

It doesn’t always have to be practical, sometimes it’s just about having fun.

Personally I love it when my training is practical, but let’s be honest, most of us are not going to be in a situation where we use all of our training. Some times is more important to just do something that you have fun doing that keeps you active.

If you’re looking for a fun way to stay active, check out Adventurer Combat Training, it’s a practical martial art system that teaches striking, grappling, and weapon combat.

I see it all the time—people save dozens of martial arts tutorials, watch them once, and then go right back to their day without ever actually training. We love to collect techniques because it makes us feel like we’re making progress, but real talk: you don’t need another saved video. You need a training session. You need a way to show up, move, and build skill, even if your schedule is messy or your space is small.

That is exactly why I put together these follow-along sessions. You don’t have to guess what to do, what to focus on, or how to string these movements together. You just have to hit play. Whether you are a total beginner who has been waiting for the right time to start, or a former practitioner trying to find your way back to training after years away, this is your path. We are building a foundation that actually transfers to real life—coordination, striking mechanics, mobility, and the kind of grounded confidence that only comes from showing up.

You do not need to be an expert to begin. You just need to be willing to start where you are. Stop waiting for the perfect conditions that are never actually going to come. Grab some space, follow the flow, and let’s get to work.

This small tweak had massive results

I get asked all the time if you can actually develop useful martial arts skills training by yourself at home. And I get the skepticism—I really do. When you’re used to the energy of a full class, training alone on a dummy can feel like a compromise. But after years of putting in the work, I’ve realized that solo training isn’t just ‘better than nothing.’ It’s where you build the foundation that lets you actually perform when you’re finally with a partner.

When I’m on the bag or the dummy, I’m not just going through the motions. I’m focusing on my posture, my footwork, and the exact placement of every strike. You can’t hide behind anyone else’s movement, and you can’t get away with sloppy mechanics. It forces you to be honest with your own progress. If you’ve been waiting for the perfect class, the perfect partner, or a gym to open up, you’re just delaying the inevitable. You don’t need a perfect environment to become capable. You just need to show up and do the work.

If you have been feeling stuck because you don’t know what to practice when you’re alone, comment “Training” and I’ll send you a link so you can begin your training for free.

Most people spend years focused purely on striking, or exclusively on grappling, or perhaps they dabble in weapons—but they treat them as three separate silos that never touch. Real talk? That is not how conflict actually works, and it is definitely not how you build true capability.

Think about it. If you only know how to punch, you are lost the second the distance closes and someone grabs you. If you only know how to grapple, you are vulnerable before you ever get your hands on them. And if you have a weapon in your hand but no understanding of how to use your body to create space or close the gap when things get messy, that weapon is just a liability.

In our training, we don’t pick one lane. We build the bridge between them. It is about understanding that a sword fight can turn into a clinch, and a clinch can result in a takedown. If your training doesn’t account for how these ranges bleed into one another, you aren’t training for reality. You’re training for a rule set.

We focus on the foundations of all three: striking, grappling, and weapons. We teach you how to weave them together so you’re not just a specialist in a vacuum, but a capable practitioner who knows how to move in any environment. You don’t have to train everything to know how to do most things.

I was messing around with some new weapon configurations this weekend, trying out a completely different discipline I’d never touched before. And honestly? It was just plain fun. But as I was moving, I started noticing how often my brain defaulted to the same principles I use in my daily combat training. Even though the context was totally different, the fundamental concepts—balance, timing, weight distribution, and staying grounded—were exactly the same.

It’s a reminder that we often get caught up in the idea that we need a black belt or ten years of experience in a specific style before we can ‘do’ something. But the truth is, martial arts isn’t about collecting techniques or performing a rigid set of patterns. It’s about building a foundation of physical capability that allows you to show up to any situation and figure it out. When you train the fundamentals, you’re not just learning how to strike or grapple; you’re learning how to move with purpose. That kind of adaptability transfers to everything else you do in life.

You don’t need to be a specialist in every single thing to be capable. You just need to have a solid base and the curiosity to explore. So go try that new hobby, pick up that new tool, or jump into a different type of movement. You might be surprised at how much of the work you’ve already put in shows up when you least expect it.

If you want to start building that kind of versatile, grounded foundation, reach out to learn more.

Everyone should have a group chat like this.
I’m lucky to have a group of friends who are just down to fight. This was after about 2 hours of sparring and we decided to have some fun. So exhausting, but so fun.

I was recently asked a very specific self defense question. Now this was involving a knife, which is extremely dangerous, and the real best answer is situational awareness so you never have to deal with that sort of thing.

Something that can help is to have a good understanding of what can happen and to have your tool belt full a few good answers to things that could pop up. And the only way to do this is to train yourself both physically and mentally. But building the awareness, the movement patterns, the footwork, and the conditioning to handle yourself takes repetition. Real talk, you can build a massive amount of coordination and practical skill by yourself if you have a clear, logical path. Most people don’t need to worry about the ‘one-shot, fight-ending’ technique; they need to worry about being able to move, stay balanced, and keep their head under pressure. That confidence doesn’t come from a secret move—it comes from doing the work when no one is watching. If you’ve been holding off on starting because you don’t have the perfect setup, stop waiting. You’re more capable than you think, but you have to be willing to actually show up and put the time in.
