Another Hellhole Gravel Grind in the books! It’s one of my favorite weekends of the year because so many teammates come out to play bikes in the woods! Congrats to everyone who rode hard and braved all the elements. Saturday was the “clean” muddy day and today was not so much.
Special kudos to Amanda Leigh Cooley for her 1st place finish on Saturday 🏆
Loved seeing everyone- let’s do it again next year!

My friends, are your hip flexors tight or weak? Most people say tight but the correct answer is BOTH. As endurance athletes we are so quad dominant that our smaller stabilizing muscles take a back seat. The following is an excellent exercise for all of you to strengthen and stabilize your hips and put more power in your legs.
Cyclists, now I’m really talking to you. Maximizing your entire pedal stroke is the best way to become a faster, more efficient rider. These hip raises will make the pull of the stroke stronger so you’re not just utilizing 50% of your circle.
So, here’s my secret weapon for a solid legs day. Lean back slightly and tighten your abs. Drive your knee into your chest. Start light and do this before squats or deadlifts- you’re going to be surprised how bad you are at this at first.

Big congrats to Jeff and Jackie this weekend at the White Lake Triathlons! Jeff crushed the International distance on Saturday and finished 2nd in AG. Then he turned around and crushed the Double Sprint on Sunday finishing 3rd in AG.
Jackie kicked ass on Sunday in the Double Sprint and landed 2nd in AG as well.
They’ve been training hard and the work has paid off. Great job guys! 🔥🔥

My athletes / clients often say “WTF? Where so you come up with this? Why can’t I do normal stuff?”
Of course we do plenty of traditional strength training but I like to throw a grand finale move in there to shock the system.
The bear crawl dumbbell push is a fantastic way to work all the muscles and give you a cardio burst.
Get creative to keep your workouts spicy.
Props to Alexis Hatch for always taking what I dole out with a smile (just kidding- this video is muted for a reason).

Now that I have your attention… Geoff from Mt. Pleasant Velo Events has some very exciting news to share about this year’s Hellhole Gravel Grind. In addition to the standard 2 day 150 mile Stage Race they have added a 2 day 90 mile Stage Race Lite. That’s 45 miles per day of pure gravel fun for those of you who want the stage race experience but NOT quite the mileage. I’m looking forward to welcoming new stage racers as well as veterans to both versions. It’s one of my favorite weekends of the year. Registration is now live on BikeReg.
See you in October!

Congratulations to Erika and Chris for their accomplishments this weekend.
Erika spent the weekend at The Ride to End Alz- a 247 mile bike event across the state of South Carolina to raise money for Alzheimer’s research and awareness. This was her longest event to date and her training paid off. She road and felt great and I’m so happy and proud of her.
Chris came out of triathlon retirement after 9 years and participated in the Door County Tri in Wisconsin with his brother and sister in law. He did great and claims he’s coming out of retirement, scheduling his next event for 2037. I’m going to encourage him to pick something a little sooner.
Great work, team!

It’s Gym Fun Friday and today my lovely assistant Alexis Hatch is getting a lesson in unconventional core work. Sure crunches are effective for getting your abs sore BUT moves such as this improve my 2 favorite big words: neuromuscular adaptation and proprioception.
I know most people do abs for the 6 pack (sorry but that’s 💯 diet) when in reality your objective should be FUNCTIONAL. In other words, training your brain and body to work together to hold your posture, protect your back AND respond and correct appropriately to sudden movements so you don’t fall down and go boom.

I’m currently having this conversation with one of my dummies, but what’s not pictured is the fact that I’m having the same talk with several others. So, I thought this would be a great time to remind each and every one of you that patience is an essential part of your fitness journey.
Upon reading this you’ve probably assumed we’re talking about physical recovery from injury or illness. However, in this case we’re actually talking about recovery from burnout.
When I design your training schedules and give you an entire week (or more) off after a big race, that’s not me just wanting your body to recover, nor is it me being lazy or taking a break from thinking about you. That’s me making sure that we step back from the go-go-go leading up to the big event. Yeah, you’re on a post-race high, feeling pumped and ready to ride that into the next wave, but there’s a finite number of those highs. And when you reach the end that’s when the trouble starts. My job is to catch it before you do because sometimes the hole you dig gets so deep you never end up getting out.
In closing, if you’re in this for the long haul you must trust the process.

Welp, another in the books for our team. This was the 20th anniversary of the race and I’ve been participating and/ or sending athletes just about every year since 2015.
This year’s edition turned out to be one of those exceptionally epic “mud years” and I’m so excited that I had such big crew experience it- most for the first time.
Congrats to .m.gordils tackling the 100 and for crushing the 50.
Super proud of each of you.
Now, who’s ready to start thinking about year 21???
