You don't have to eat spinach to be like Popeye!💪⚓
Move your lips slightly to the side when you turn to breathe. Helps you get you get air while keeping your head low.
Notice how bottom goggle is in the water? This is the ideal low head position you want in freestyle.
But this takes time to figure out and get it just right. When you start out, your head is going to be a little too high. It is okay, it is part of learning freestyle. You can't expect to get it 100% right from the start.
A great way to practice "Popeye mouth" and a low head position is to put your face in the sink or tub. Be aware of how it feels - the water on your face, moving your lips, etc. And when you hop in the pool, practice there too. It's totally okay if your first few lessons are just standing by the wall doing this drill exact. Baby steps!

When it comes to learning freestyle, a common error is to focus more on the inhale than the exhale. There's this fear of not getting enough oxygen, so you want to take in big gulps of air, but don't know how to effectively release it. This inhale/exhale imbalance can cause you to feel dizzy and lightheaded.
So how do you do it right?
This can be done in the shower, sink, tub or pool. Check out our feed for videos on doing this drill in the sink and shower. There will also be a video of this drill included in our online school.
Gently inhale through your mouth and lower your face into the water gently exhaling through your nose. As your face is coming back up for the next inhale, do a quick, forceful exhale. This last exhale ensures you're ready for the next inhale.
Bonus feature of this drill: it can help calm you down during the swim portion of your triathlon race (should that ever be your goal with learning how to swim). Panic attacks can be caused by turbulent and/or cold water, athlete contact, etc. To help you relax and regain composure, hold onto a kayak or buoy, or tread water, and do this breathing drill until your mind and body have calmed down.

Pools are closed. And you're probably thinking, "well that's just great because I wanted to learn how to swim🙄."
What if we told you that you don't need a pool to start learning freestyle?! Because you DON'T (you don't need a tub either 🤪). You can start learning freestyle on land right now!
Swimming is a skill and strength sport.
It requires strength to hold your body in certain positions. It requires strength to move forward in the water. It requires skill to understand how to move your body. Annnd you can start working on both on land!
Start NOW by downloading a free dryland workout guide so you can start learning freestyle right now! (Link in bio!) If you're at home bored out of your mind you can sit in a tub in your suit, goggles and fins or you can start doing dryland exercises...or both😅
This is what most new swimmers freak out about.
Rhythmic breathing.
It’s new. It’s odd. It’s not how they breathe on land. It feels weird. And sometimes water gets in their nose and mouth.🥴
Rhythmic breathing is the first lesson we teach. You can’t progress to freestyle until you nail it.🏊♂️🏊♀️
How to nail it? Practice. Lots of practice. And sometimes swallowing water or getting some in your nose is part of the learning process. But don’t let that stop you! The more frequently you practice, the quicker you will get the hang of it. The best part? You don’t need a pool to practice in. Use your kitchen sink, bathtub and even shower.
➡️How to do it? Gently inhale through your mouth for about 2 seconds and gently exhale through your nose for about 2 seconds. Repeat several times.
Why do it? You need to feel comfortable and confident with your head and face low in the water when you swim freestyle.🏊♀️🏊♂️
It’s really hard to swim with your head out of the water the whole time (because the legs sink...and once they sink, you start sinking). And if that’s been your freestyle and you wonder why it’s so hard, that’s why. You don’t want to be vertical, you want your body to be horizontal on top of the water.
Correct body position (all parts of your body at the surface) starts with your head in the water...which means you need to know how to breathe correctly. Holding your breath won’t cut it.
Tag us in any pics or Insta stories! We’d love to give you a shoutout!👍
Bonus points if you wear a cap and goggles and make it feel like a real swim lesson 😅

It’s okay to lose fitness.
You’ve gained something else. Time.
Use it wisely.
Fitness can be gained back. It’s not gone forever. Your body has memory. You can and will get it back.
What you can never get back is time.
Now you have the time to
be still
rest
sleep in
work on your weaknesses
be with your family
snuggle your fur babies
You don’t want to miss this blessing in disguise.
Unplug, look around and be present.
Are we missing on the list?

LAND.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Keep calm and swim on land. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How? By doing dryland training. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dryland training is just a fancy term for doing swim specific workouts on land. No pool required.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Believe it or not, many freestyle skills can actually be learned on land. Take water out of the equation and it becomes so much easy to learn movement patterns and work on good form. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There's no better time to start your freestyle journey!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

1st (of 6) dryland form workouts.
You CAN get stronger and fix common freestyle errors right now from your living room! It's a perfect way to start your swim journey.
Imp: these workouts build upon each other in challenge and skill, so take your time focusing on good form.
Repeat 5x through:
(total duration is 15 minutes)
1️⃣(60 seconds) Front Kick Form: How to do it: lay on your stomach with hands in line with shoulders. Nose touching ground, toes pointed. Squeeze your butt like you’re trying to give yourself a we**ie so your legs lift up. Why do it: helps you feel correct horizontal position + helps you understand how your glutes play a role in the up kick (yes you want to kick up as well as down in freestyle).
2️⃣(30 seconds) Front Plank: How to do it: push up onto your hands and toes, keep core strong, and hold. You can modify from your knees. Why do it: helps you focus on keeping a strong core while being horizontal on your front.
3️⃣(30 seconds) Side plank: How to do it: push up onto one hand and toes, keep core strong, and hold. You can modify from your knees, and further from your forearm. Why do it: helps you understand how to maintain a strong core while being horizontal on your side.
4️⃣(30 seconds) Flutter kick: How to do it: lay on your back while keeping your core strong and toes pointed. Make small, strong kicks. Why do it: helps you understand how to maintain a strong core while you kick + pointed toes.
5️⃣(30 seconds each arm) Exercise bands w/ catch phase: How to do it: use a light resistance exercise band. Bend at the waist and extend your arm, hand in line with shoulder. Pull the handle back leading with the hand and keep your elbow high. You want your arm to have a diamond shape on the catch (see front view). When your hand is directly under your shoulder, return to the start position. (the catch phase is the start of the underwater pull).
If you have wanted to learn freestyle (or improve your freestyle) you can start NOW!
🚿Here's simple way to get started on the first freestyle drill- rhythmic breathing!
So many people don't like water in their mouth when swimming, yet that is part of swimming. A little water will always be in your mouth. This drill in the shower is a great way to get used to that sensation.
And if you shower everyday, you can practice everyday!

Gross? Yes🤢
One of the reasons why most pools are closed during the coronavirus outbreak? Probably.
Who’s considering never complaining about chlorine levels being high?🖐🖐🖐
