Struggling with Tornado Kick Timing?

Stop Kicking Too Early.

One of the most common problems beginners have with the Tornado Kick is knowing when to throw the kick.

A common mistake is extending the kicking leg too early, before the body has completed enough of the rotation.

Instead, let your body rotate first.

As you turn, wait until your hips come around and face the target. That’s the moment to throw the kick.

This drill is designed to help you develop that timing and connect your rotation naturally into the kick.

Don’t kick first.
Rotate first.
Hips face the target.
Then kick.

Once you understand the timing, the Tornado Kick starts to feel much more natural.

Save this drill and try it in your next training session!

Improve Your Tornado Kick with This Drill

Hip Position & Vertical Jump

Having trouble with your Tornado Kick?

Focus on these two key points:

1. Turn Your Hips Toward the Target
Just like a regular Roundhouse Kick, your hips should face the target before you throw the kick.

2. Jump Straight Up
Don’t jump sideways or diagonally. Practice jumping vertically while maintaining control of your rotation.

A common mistake is trying to kick before the body is in the right position.

Turn the hips. Jump straight up. Then kick.

Master these two details and you’ll see a big difference in your Tornado Kick.

A Black Belt Is More Than a Belt.

Today was a special moment for our students. After years of training, hard work, and commitment, they finally reached one of the biggest milestones in their Taekwondo journey: earning their Black Belt.

Training consistently in one activity for 3, 4, or even 5 years at such a young age is not easy.

Along the way, there are days when they feel tired. There are moments when they become frustrated, face challenges, or even want to quit.

But they keep going.

They learn to overcome those moments, come back to training, and continue moving toward their goal.

That is what earning a Black Belt truly means to me.

I believe Taekwondo and martial arts today are about much more than learning how to fight. We are teaching life.

Through Taekwondo, our students learn discipline, respect, perseverance, responsibility, confidence, and how to overcome challenges. These lessons will stay with them long after they leave the training floor.

One day, these children will grow up to become adults, parents, professionals, and leaders in their communities.

And I truly believe the lessons they are learning today will help them become great citizens and leaders who will make a positive difference in this country and in the world.

Congratulations to all of our new Black Belts.

You earned this moment.

And remember, Black Belt is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a new one. 🥋

360° Reverse Roundhouse Kick (YEOK TURN)

Detailed Coaching & Step-by-Step Drills

Want to improve your Yeok Turn?

Instead of practicing the full kick over and over, break it down and build the movement step by step.

DRILL 1: Build the Step

Start with the basic stepping pattern.

Key Point: On the final step, open your chest to prepare your body for the rotation.

DRILL 2: Leg Lift + Rotation

Now connect the first drill to the rotation. Lift the leg and begin turning your body.

Key Point: Turn your eyes first. Your head and eyes help lead the rest of your body into the rotation.

DRILL 3: Step + Jump + Rotation

Slowly go through the steps, then connect the jump and rotation.

Key Point: Use your arms and legs together, turn your eyes quickly, and use your entire body to generate more rotation.

Don’t rush the full kick.

Build the step. Understand the rotation. Then put it all together.

Small details make a big difference.

Jasleen’s Freestyle Poomsae Journey Day 6

One of the 5 Required Skills: Acrobatic Kicking

Today, we’re working on another one of the five required technical elements in Freestyle Poomsae: Acrobatic Kicking.

Typically, this element combines an acrobatic movement, such as a roundoff backflip, with a kick.

For Jasleen’s routine, we’re working on a variation of the technique, adapting the movement while keeping the acrobatic element and kicking action connected.

The challenge is making everything flow as one movement while maintaining control, balance, timing, and presentation.

We’re building this Freestyle Poomsae one element at a time.

Another skill added. One step closer to August 29.
