Let's get to swimming!

I had a recent coach call with one of my athletes and at the time she needed some time away from swimming with her busy schedule. We had a great conversation on how to put it back in to her training schedule.
So it made me think. I also have a love / hate relationship with swimming especially after I have taken some time off. It's the one discipline that requires a couple of other commitments - preparation (driving to the pool, getting changed into a suit, and in a good mental headspace) and showers! ; )

Here was our plan:
#1: Ease back in: Choose one day of the week where you can carve out time without interruptions. Such as a day that work load is less or kids don't have activities.

#2. Start low, as in low in volume. It's ok to not knock out a 3500y swim the first few weeks. Start with easy drills, relaxed aerobic swimming, and controlled breathing to help reconnect technique before speed returns. Your fitness comes back quicker than you think once your rhythm is restored.

#3. Set a simple goal for each session—show up, hold good form, or finish feeling better than when you started. Resist the urge to chase old paces right away; they’ll come naturally within a couple of weeks.

Most importantly, keep your future race goals in sight. A brief pause won’t derail your training, but rushing the comeback can. Ease in, trust the process, and let momentum rebuild one swim at a time.

Fun with friends!

A new year isn’t about becoming a completely different person, reinventing yourself or doing a complete 180 to make a change—it’s about becoming a little more YOU. 🌱

Setting goals gives direction. Your goals don’t have to be perfect or huge; they just have to matter to you. Take time to dream honestly, set intentions that excite you, and break them into small steps you can take one day at a time. Some days will be hard, and that’s okay—progress isn’t linear. What matters most is showing up, learning again, and choosing to keep going.

This year is a fresh page.
Write it with courage, patience, and belief in yourself. You’re more capable than you think!
