Today, Seniors in Play launched a fun new program called Senior Center Takeover at Bob Ross Senior Center. Led by instructor Danielle King, our troupe took their improv skills out of the classroom and into the cafeteria, inviting members who were spending time there to join us in some playful theatre activities.
We weren't quite sure how it would be received. As it turns out, we needn't have worried.
The response was enthusiastic, energetic, and full of laughter. One improvised scene featured troupe members Lee Markman and Ida Steele in a dramatic dispute over an unfaithful husband. Before long, several of the women watching jumped into the action, each claiming to be dating him as well. The scene grew funnier and more outrageous by the minute, with everyone eager to play along.
Another crowd favorite featured Javier Cortinas and Mary Williams improvising a scene between a grandmother and her ne'er-do-well grandson, drawing laughs and enthusiastic reactions from the audience.
We wrapped up with a lively round of "This Is Not a Stick," and many of our new friends joined in with creative ideas and plenty of laughter.
What made today special wasn't just the fun we had. It was watching our troupe members confidently lead others into the joy of play. The room was buzzing with energy, connection, and imagination. It was wonderful to see so many people jump in, take creative risks, and remind us all that you're never too old to play.
A huge thank you to the Bob Ross troupe for helping make our first Senior Center Takeover such a success. We had a fantastic time, and we hope some of the people we met today will come check out a class in the future.

Seniors in Play showcase season is well underway, and the creativity on display has been nothing short of remarkable.
From an original play written by one of our members and featuring multiple colorful characters at Bob Ross Senior Center, to a reimagined and updated version of Gilligan's Island at Lions Field, each troupe has brought its own unique voice and vision to the stage.
District 2 treated audiences to songs and an original play, while other centers presented original works imagining San Antonio legends in purgatory, the Charlie Brown gang in their later years, and a pastiche of published and original scenes ranging from laugh-out-loud funny to deeply moving and poignant. Another showcase took audiences on a journey through the decades since World War II, culminating in humorous observations about modern life.
Across the board, our performers have shown us some of their best work yet. Their creativity, talent, and willingness to share their stories continue to inspire and entertain.
And we're not done yet!
The troupe at Robinette Senior Center will present its showcase on Thursday, June 4, at 10:00 a.m. I recently had the privilege of observing a rehearsal and got a preview of their original comedic scene, a hilarious look at the activities inside a modern Department of Motor Vehicles office.
We hope you'll join us for this and any of our upcoming showcases. Please check in at the reception desk upon arrival.

Behind the Bill Gundry Artistic Legacy Award is the legacy of a San Antonio theatre artist whose vision, passion, and belief in the power of storytelling helped lay the foundation for Seniors in Play.
Bill Gundry was more than an artist. He was a mentor, collaborator, and advocate for community-centered theatre — someone who believed creativity could bring people together, give voice to lived experiences, and transform lives at every age.
His impact continues to live on through every class, performance, and story shared on our stages.
The Bill Gundry Artistic Legacy Award honors artists who carry that same spirit forward through their work, leadership, and commitment to the arts community in San Antonio.

Every life is shaped by the choices we make.
This week, the Northeast Seniors in Play Troupe took the stage with Choices, a showcase filled with laughter, memories, unexpected twists, and heartfelt reflections on the moments that define us.
From classic comedy inspired by Mark Twain to original stories about love, dancing, family, and life's many crossroads, our performers reminded us that every choice, big or small, helps write the story of who we become.
Congratulations to Director Sherri Small and the entire Northeast troupe for sharing their talent, courage, and creativity with our community. We are honored to celebrate these voices and stories.

The performance reflected on memories, family, growing older, changing times, and the wisdom that comes with life experience. From a heartfelt remembrance of living in Hawaii during Pearl Harbor as a child, to music celebrating the 50’s and 60’s, to humorous moments about technology and modern life, the showcase took the audience on an emotional journey filled with laughter, reflection, and connection.
The finale performance of “Remember When” beautifully captured the spirit of the production and the shared experiences that connect generations together.
