Then we look at what that model is actually doing in the market right now, and you see the same information we are working from.

Every gun bought off our floor, new or used, is covered, and our gunsmiths do the work on our own bench. When it passes down in the family, the coverage passes with it.

That second part is the one people do not expect. A r***e bought by a grandparent is still covered in a grandchild's hands.

A stock that does not fit you does not always need replacing. Wood can be bent.

Warm the wrist, set it in the jig, move it a little, let it cool. Then it goes back on the gun.

Two pistols, same caliber, same size, and one costs a good deal more than the other. What is the difference actually buying you?

Sights. Whether they are usable as they come, or whether the first thing you do is replace them.

The trigger. Not whether it is light, but whether it is consistent, because consistent is what you can learn to shoot.

Fit and finish where it matters. How the slide runs, whether the controls are where your hand already is.

Parts and support. Whether magazines and springs will still be easy to find in ten years.

Somebody opens a closet, finds a double with a name nobody recognizes, and decides it is probably nothing.

Often it came out of the same factory as the gun they would have recognized.

Makers sold guns under trade names, built on the same machines by the same hands, to be sold through a hardware chain or a catalogue house that wanted its own name on the barrel. The name on top tells you who sold it. It does not tell you who made it.

That is why an unfamiliar name on an old double is a reason to ask rather than a reason to assume. The factory history is the interesting part, and it takes no valuation at all to be worth knowing.

A barreled action is not a r***e. It is the half of one that decides how good the other half has to be.

What is still in front of you once it arrives.

Bedding, so the action sits in the stock the same way every time it is torqued down.

The recoil lug, square and seated, because it is what stops the action moving under recoil.

Thread pitch, if anything is going on the muzzle. It is a specification, not a guess.

Trigger compatibility, which is the one people find out about last and the one that costs the most to get wrong.

We thread, we bed and we fit, so we know which of those actually decides whether a build shoots. Bring the parts and the plan by either store.

Optics-ready means the slide is cut for a plate or a direct mount. It does not mean any optic will bolt on.

What makes a mount hold: the plate made for that optic's footprint, screws the right length, the torque the optic maker specifies, and a witness mark so you can see if anything moves.

Get those right and the dot holds its zero. We mount and check optics on our own bench.

If you buy a fi***rm online it does not come to your house. It comes to a shop, and quite often that shop is us.

People are frequently a little embarrassed about this, as though turning up to collect something they bought somewhere else is an imposition. It is not. We do it constantly and it is an ordinary part of the day.

What it looks like from your side. You bring identification. There is paperwork, and nobody expects you to arrive knowing how it goes. It is not instant, so do not plan on being in and out in ninety seconds.

And the part worth remembering: look at the gun before you sign anything. Open it, check it is what you ordered and that it arrived in the condition you were told. That is far easier to raise at the counter than a week later.

Quail opens November 1st and runs to February 28th, and chachalaca now runs on exactly the same dates.

Worth knowing if you plan around the old calendar. One caveat on the chachalaca half: it is open in four Valley counties and nowhere else, so for most people around here this is a quail season with a footnote.

What it means for the gun is the more useful half. An upland gun that has sat since last February is the one we see in October with a sticky ejector, a stock that has dried and shrunk at the head, and chokes that have not been out since the last season.

Bring it in before November rather than the week you need it. Our gunsmiths do that work here, at both stores.
