Back in one of my favorite spots in the world! Walking to the restaurant and my buddy Leo who has been here for the 11 years I’ve visited meets me with a giant bear hug and says I’ll be right back. Bring out the executive chef and says I made a special ceviche for you. Welcome!

You ever trust a guy just by his voice? Well that’s all I had to go on because I didn’t meet the guy until after we had a well established agreement that we made on a verbal handshake. To this day that’s all we ever needed.

I think I saw Jodie Gay from across a hump some 55 miles offshore of Wilmington NC. I was invited by the Greek Nick’s for a day of offshore cobia fishing. We were having a banner day. There were a couple other center console offshore that bluebird day. Nick said to me that’s Jodie over in that boat. I yelled over to him and he just gave me a half wave and kept reeling in his cobia or grouper. No need for long hello’s. He had fish to catch!

Later that week I stopped by Bluewater Candy World Headquarters and like Squidnation World Headquarters it was out back of his house. Man they had it going on! Jodie was at his station making rigs. As big as BWC was back in the day and even bigger today Jodie always seemed to me like he was sitting at his station making rigs or on the road visiting his customers.

I remember finally sitting down with him and His son in law Russell one day at Icast. No fancy restaurant or pages of notes just three dudes talking about fishing, making rigs and the show while eating pub burgers. We had some great laughs that day and then he said Bill, your product is heavy. That shipping is killing us! Can we do something about that. We agreed to split the cost and went back to talking about fishing. I don’t think we ever even wrote it down.

Later in years I dealt more with Russell and Jessica Weaver I remember when I started working with them more than Jodie. One day I asked if he retired and they laughed. He was at his station making rigs.

I’m sorry I never got to fish with Jodie but me personally and Squidnation as a company are so honored to have worked and still today working together on that same verbal agreement. Jodie made us a name down south and we are forever grateful but most importantly he instilled a trust and honored us with his integrity as just a good ole boy who we could work with. I understand he passed away fishing. Now that truly does make me smile on this sad day. My condolences to the entire Gay and Weaver family.

I listen to a ton of fishing podcast and they are all enjoyable and informative. Lately one has been standing out on the informative and tips side of podcasts. Backlash Radio with my nephew Captain Anthony Pino and Capt Nick Carullo have been so informative I have lately said to myself I can’t believe they shared that info! Reading water, SST shots, Sonar hints and something I find extremely interesting is what are these captains thinking while up on the bridge. Why are they doing this or why are they doing that? Why did they choose to come here today? The two hosts and their guests have been extremely forthcoming with their info. The last episode was a manual on fishing the mid Atlantic canyons. Check it out! Great job guys. Keep it up.

Ok so I lied about the food tour being over. Walked down the street to a very interesting restaurant. It’s a museum to an adventurer by the name of Genuino Madruga. He was the first Portuguese sailor to circumnavigate the world solo and he did it twice.

The octopus stew was fabulous. Rice, tomatoes, onions and all the spices along with a healthy portion of octopus. And Genuino Madruga himself sat us down. The view was a ten as well

It was fun seeing old friends at Teasers last night. The conversation turned to an old topic of what has changed over the last 40 years to advance billfishing. The same ole answers came flying out, Sonar, SST, Horsepower, Dredges etc. On the drive home I kept thinking about the question and I finally came up with my answer that has personally helped my fishing over the last 40 years. Can’t wait to see what the next 40 years brings 😊

Pam Taylor has created a monster along with Megan Schulte and Ainsley Hvizda. The vibe at Wild Bills was electric for the awards ceremony of the 2024 Tuna and Tiaras Tournament. The scales were buzzing with participants weighing heavy stringers of Tuna and single big fish qualifiers. Congrats ladies and all those that helped make this tournament a huge success.
