PRESS RELEASE: Texas DF95 TT Series

San Antonio Edition!
Hosted by: Woodlawn Sailing Club AMYA #112
May 2, 2026 -Rescheduled from April 11 (rain!)
11 boats
Winds 8-12 from NNE, very unusual in May
Temps - high of 76*, very unusual in May
RD - Ray Seta, Denise Delgado

Just a beautiful day in San Antonio for this one day for our regatta. We had skippers from Austin, Georgetown, Houston, and San Antonio. As lunch came up about 1 PM we had already ran six races, and it looked like it was going to be an ongoing battle with William Ramlo and Philippe Herve. Eric Gregory and Joe Roddy we’re always right there rounding out the top five. With the unusual north to northeast winds it was a challenge to get good Windward / Leeward courses, but somehow we managed with all of our permanent marks set in a circle around the lake, giving us a lot of choices for windward and leeward marks. The City of San Antonio provided our usual yellow barge for the next month since WSC will be hosting two more AMYA Regional Championship, ending on the first weekend of June. Russ Gardner made a scarce appearance back at our lake, which we always enjoys seeing him since he is a member of Woodlawn Sailing Club and always gives us his full support. Going into the last set of three races there was a two-way tie for first and third and fourth was only separated by one point, so it was very interesting to watch the racing with those top four boats. We finished up around
3 PM and with everybody sticking around to lend a hand, we had all the assets of WSC all put up within 30 minutes, then it was time just to sit around and talk and enjoy an adult beverage for another hour, thank you for all the out-of-town skippers who made the trip. I was glad we were able to get the rescheduled date off because I was afraid it wouldn’t be until August to get the next opportunity to do a four hour TT series day. Nobody wants to race in August in Texas.

Good Winds!

PRESS RELEASE: WSC Clubhouse Day

The nice thing about being involved in a Club of
anything, is the opportunity to be able to alway give back to the hobby that gives you so much joy! Whether it’s to deep clean your Clubhouse, or hand your radio to some spectators, to just keep your radio at home and volunteer for your locally hosted regatta, everyone should always find time to give back.
Today was our rescheduled WSC Clubhouse Cleaning Day that was postponed from a previous cold, rainy, and ugly day that was earlier this month. Sometimes it’s not about sailing , it’s about giving back and support your local Club! We had so much stuff out of clubhouse that local park goers actually thought we were having a garage sale! Thank you to WSC members Eric Gregory, Vicki Stones, William Ramlo, John Rodriguez, Myself , and our newest member recently moved down from Maryland with his fleet of Classic Vintage Boats, Jeff Beck! This was a great way to Welcome him to the Club by putting him in charge of dusting. All in all it went well with a complete deep clean in just under two and one half hours. You can smell the Pinesol in the pics!
WSC is ready to host the 2026 DF95 Texas Travelers Trophy Series on Saturday April 11th! This will be the first event of our busy 2026 year of hosting major events inviting out of towners! WSC will also be hosting thee AMYA Regionals Championship for three AMYA Classes with one possibly being upgraded to a Nationals. We are the busiest AMYA Club in Region 5.

Good Winds!

Valuable Club Volunteers: Marty Giblin, Eric Gregory, William Gregory, Richard & Denise Delgado (Regatta Donations), Bob Piper (Regatta Donations), Dick Van Hooser(Cash Donation), Rick Phillips (BBQ Cook),

Just another Columbus Day weekend for the 20th time the Woodlawn Sailing Club(WSC) has hosted the Victoria regatta in some form. Four(4) AMYA National Championships, Eight(8) AMYA Region 5 Championship, and Six(6) times as just an Annual reoccurring regatta. It's obvious that the Victoria Class has deep roots at WSC and AMYA Region 5.

Friday, being just a practice day, this is one regatta that everyone from really far away come in a full day ahead to grab all the practice and tuning they can get. With Skippers from Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas(Austin, Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio). Every years brings out pleasant surprises and this year was no different. Having Hew Hamilton, original member of the legendary Team Katina from New Orleans, formed in 2005, came out of retirement to come back to the Alamo Classic after a 12 year hiatus. Last time we saw Hew was 2013 at the Victoria NCR hosted at WSC. Great to have him back, and it clear as with most legend he didn't loose his touch on the radio with his Final finishing position. Another local skipper we have not seen since the 2022 Victoria NCR was Bruce “Budman” Garcia from San Antonio. Also returning after a few years off is Tirza Dabdoub, another original member of Team Katrina from New Orleans. Great to have these folks back and still racing a Victoria.

Saturday, first day of racing and with light winds forecasted, WSC will always try to start on time as per NOR with Skipper's Meeting always on time then hang out and wait for wind to fill in. And just like clockwork and as if it was ordered, we got the first race off at 10;30am. It was great to watch all veteran Alamo Classic skippers go against each other on a 16 boat Starting Line. At WSC regatta, and with our permanent nine mark racing circle, we can always get good windward/leeward courses. And with dedicated to high Race Committee quality we had Terry Lindemann manning the rescue boat any time boats were on the water. No waiting or delays to be rescued is our goal at WSC Regattas. With 13 races for Saturday we had our top five for the day with Stephanz leading followed by Hamilton, Gregory, Garcia, and Piper. Time for a San Antonio Mexican food dinner at a great little place across the street from Host Hotel. Having 11 of the 16 skippers in attendance, it was a long dinner with lots of laughing.

Sunday brought us a better forecast for more wind and a better direction. As we started on time, as usual, in order to get another double digit of races off by cut-off time(3:00pm). Ron Stephanz probable had the most nerve racking day sailing all four of his throw-out races on Sunday with Hew Hamilton putting together a nice string of scores to try to close the 14 point gap between him and Stephanz. But when it was all done and the math worked out it was Ron Stephanz taking the title. And with a 2nd place overall for the weekend, we can only hope that we have Hew Hamilton back for a long time. Congratulations to Ron Stephanz from Rontanda West, Florida for the becoming the AMYA Region 5 Champion and roll into the Victoria NCR in December, hosted by his own club in Punta Gorda.

What(?) no mention of food by a WSC regatta, never! Not only does WSC feed you a hot Mexican Breakfast with Tacos and Mexican sweetbread. Saturday is also a WSC tradition of Texas BBQ, by Charcoal Grill, and to complete the menu Mexican Paletas Ice Cream for dessert during the afternoon racing breaks. Sunday again gets you a hot breakfast at Clubhouse and the our traditional BBQ grill ed Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and of course reheating all the leftover BBQ from the day before. As we always hear out on the patio are the familiar words “no one goes home hungry from a WSC regatta”. And as tradition would have it with another tradition was for all out-of -town skippers to stay overnight through to Monday so we can all get together on Sunday evening at a great Tex-Mex dinner at a San Antonio staple of a restaurant called Alamo Cafe!

Special thanks and recognition to our Race Committee of Sylvia Dimayuga who will never hesitate calling you over early and/or a General Recall at anytime, and don't think to argue with her cause the rest of the fleet is on her side!!! Assistant Chauncey Piper also at the clipboard jotting down #'s as fast as Sylvia can call them out. Not only do these two do RD duties, but at lunch they will be your smiling food servers for both lunches. This is called double duty for Regatta support! Thank you also goes to Richard and Denise Delgado for the Regatta Trophies and Skippers give away. Club member from Dallas, Bob Piper also donated the coveted laser engraved wooden key chains for all skippers also. And again to Terry Lindemann for spending two days on the water as “Rescue Monkey” in the chase boat! One thing different this year was the absence after 21 year tradition of our overnight security team of Joe Sheffield and family! Joe and his wife are are now happily retired in Thailand. Have a great retirement and know you and the grandkids will be missed after we experienced them growing up over 20+ years!!! Your always a member of the WSC family here in San Antonio, TX.

The 2025 AMYA Region 5 Championship in the books! Welcome to the Show!
